Why Net Banking Still Shines
In the age of instant payments through UPI, it’s easy to overlook older methods. However, when it comes to something as crucial as tax payments, reliability is key. Net banking provides a direct, secure channel from your bank account to the Income Tax
Department's e-Pay Tax service. Unlike payment gateways that can sometimes involve third-party processors and additional charges, the net banking option on the official portal is a direct debit facility offered through authorised banks. This direct integration often means fewer transaction failures, no convenience fees, and an immediate generation of the challan receipt, giving you peace of mind that your payment has been successfully processed.
Getting Started: What You Need
Before you begin the payment process, ensure you have a few things ready. First, you need your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and the mobile number linked to it to receive a One-Time Password (OTP) for verification. Second, you must have an active bank account with net banking facilities enabled with one of the authorised banks listed on the income tax portal. Finally, know the correct assessment year for which you are paying taxes (for the financial year 2025-26, the assessment year is 2026-27) and the type of payment you are making, such as Self-Assessment Tax.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Payment
Paying your tax via net banking is a straightforward process on the official income tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in). 1. Navigate to e-Pay Tax: On the portal's homepage, click on the 'e-Pay Tax' link, available under the 'Quick Links' section. You do not need to log in to make a payment. 2. Enter Your Details: Input your PAN and a mobile number for OTP verification. After successful verification, your masked name will appear; confirm it and proceed. 3. Select Payment Category: Choose 'Income Tax' from the options and select the correct Assessment Year (e.g., 2026-27) and the 'Type of Payment' (e.g., Self-Assessment Tax - 300). 4. Add Tax Breakup: Enter the amounts for tax, cess, interest, and penalties in the respective fields and continue. 5. Choose Net Banking: In the 'Select Payment Mode' section, choose the 'Net Banking' option. You will see a list of authorised banks. Select your bank from this list. 6. Complete the Transaction: You will be redirected to your bank's net banking login page. Log in, confirm the payment details, and authorise the transaction. Once done, you will be redirected back to the tax portal.
What If Your Bank Isn't Listed?
The Income Tax Department has authorised a specific list of banks to collect taxes directly via the net banking mode. If your bank is not on this direct list, you still have options. You can choose the 'Payment Gateway' mode. This gateway will then allow you to use the net banking facility of non-authorised banks, though a transaction fee might apply. Alternatively, you can use the RTGS/NEFT option to generate a challan and make the payment from any bank.
After the Payment: The Final Step
Upon successful payment, a challan receipt with a Challan Reference Number (CRN) will be generated and displayed. It is crucial to download and save this challan as proof of payment. The payment details will also be available in your 'Payment History' if you were logged into the portal. When you file your Income Tax Return (ITR), ensure that the details from this challan are correctly entered to claim credit for the tax paid.
