The Big Update: A Sleeper Vande Bharat
The most significant update for the popular Delhi-Varanasi route is the planned launch of an all-new Vande Bharat sleeper train. While the route already has daytime Vande Bharat chair-car services, this will be the first of its kind to offer an overnight
option, allowing travellers to sleep through the journey and arrive fresh in the morning. This new service aims to cater to the heavy passenger traffic, particularly during festive seasons like Diwali and Chhath Puja, by providing a premium and time-saving alternative to existing overnight trains. The train is expected to consist of 16 coaches, including First AC, AC 2-tier, and AC 3-tier classes, with a total capacity of 823 passengers.
The Game Changer: A Faster Overnight Journey
Currently, the fastest daytime Vande Bharat chair car covers the distance in about eight hours. Other overnight trains can take anywhere from 10 to 15 hours. The new sleeper Vande Bharat aims to complete the 759-kilometre journey in approximately eight hours. Proposed schedules suggest a departure from Varanasi around 9:20 PM, reaching New Delhi by 5:00 AM the next morning. The return journey would follow a similar late-night departure from Delhi. This schedule is a game-changer, as it allows passengers to save a full day of travel, making weekend trips and business travel far more convenient. The train is expected to run at speeds up to 130 kmph, with potential for future increases to 160 kmph as tracks are upgraded.
What to Expect for Comfort and Cost
The Vande Bharat sleeper trains are designed to offer a significant upgrade in passenger comfort and modern amenities. Like their chair-car counterparts, these trains are expected to feature modern interiors, bio-vacuum toilets, sensor-based lighting, and improved safety features. The primary advantage is the availability of comfortable berths for a good night's sleep. While official fares have not been announced, estimates based on the standard Vande Bharat sleeper pricing model suggest what passengers might pay. A journey in 3-tier AC could cost around ₹1,820, 2-tier AC approximately ₹2,350, and First AC close to ₹2,880, exclusive of GST and other charges. These prices are estimates, and the final fare structure will be confirmed by Indian Railways closer to the launch date.
How It Compares to Other Options
The new sleeper service will compete directly with existing popular overnight trains like the Shiv Ganga Express, as well as flights and road travel. While flying is the fastest option, with a flight time of about 90 minutes, total travel time including airport commutes and security checks can extend to over four hours. Flights are also significantly more expensive. The Vande Bharat sleeper offers a compelling middle ground: much faster than other trains and buses, more comfortable for an overnight journey, and potentially more cost-effective and convenient than flying when considering door-to-door travel time. It will stop at key intermediate stations like Kanpur and Prayagraj, adding to its utility for a wider range of travellers.
Looking Ahead: The Bullet Train Dream
While the Vande Bharat sleeper is the immediate update, the long-term vision for this corridor is even more ambitious. The Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor is one of seven bullet train projects announced by the government. This project aims to slash travel time to under four hours, with trains running at speeds of up to 350 kmph. However, this bullet train project is still in the planning and pre-construction phase, with land acquisition and detailed project reports being finalized. Its completion is still many years away, making the new Vande Bharat sleeper the most important and practical travel upgrade for the foreseeable future.
