A New Way to Measure a City's Appeal
The headline-making results come from the Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index 2026, a study with a distinctly modern twist. Conducted by Yanolja Research in collaboration with Purdue University and Seoul's Kyung Hee University, this index steps away
from traditional metrics like visitor numbers or hotel bookings. Instead, it dives deep into global digital conversations, analyzing social media data across 14 languages to gauge how people truly feel about 200 different cities. The final score is a blend of two key components: 'awareness,' which measures a city’s fame and how much it is talked about, and 'attractiveness,' which analyzes the sentiment behind those conversations—whether the buzz is positive or negative.
New York's Reign: A Titan of Global Fame
Securing the top spot, New York's victory is a testament to its colossal global presence. The Big Apple’s top ranking is driven by its immense 'awareness' score. For centuries, the city has been the backdrop for countless films, television shows, and novels, embedding itself into the global consciousness. Its world-renowned landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty are instantly recognizable to people everywhere, ensuring it dominates digital conversations. While other cities might evoke warmer feelings, none command the sheer volume of attention that New York does, making it the undisputed champion in the overall rankings which weigh both fame and favourability.
Paris: The Enduring Power of Romance
Cruising into second place, Paris reaffirms its status as a perennial favourite. Much like New York, the French capital benefits from incredible global fame, built on a powerful image of romance, art, and high culture. Its performance in the index highlights a winning combination of high visibility and overwhelmingly positive visitor sentiment. The city consistently ranks as one of the world's leading tourism hubs, and this study confirms that its allure isn't fading. Interestingly, while Paris is second in the combined ranking, it slips to fifth when judged purely on the positive sentiment of visitor experiences, suggesting its fame gives it a significant boost.
Osaka: Japan's Capital of Cool
Perhaps the most compelling story from the 2026 index is the ascent of Osaka. While placing third overall, the Japanese city holds a remarkable secret weapon: it ranked first in the world for pure 'attractiveness'. This means that among visitors who talk about their experiences, Osaka generates the most positive feelings, even more so than New York or Paris. The city is celebrated for its dynamic food scene, rich history, and the seamless blend of modern urban energy with cultural depth. Its high standing is further bolstered by other reports, such as the EIU's Global Liveability Index, where Osaka also consistently places in the top ten for its exceptional quality of life, infrastructure, and stability.
What This Tells Us About Modern Cities
This sentiment-driven ranking offers a glimpse into the future of urban appeal. It suggests that a city's power is no longer just about economic might or the number of landmarks it possesses. It's also about the quality of the experience it offers and the positive stories that visitors share online. The strong showing of Asian cities like Osaka, Kyoto, and Seoul in the top five signals a broader trend of the region’s growing influence in global tourism and culture. As digital word-of-mouth becomes ever more powerful, the cities that can convert simple awareness into genuine affection and positive buzz are the ones that will define the next era of global travel.
