A Window to a Greener World
Indian Railways has recently introduced an Executive Vistadome AC coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, transforming a regular journey into a premium sightseeing experience. These state-of-the-art coaches are designed for immersion, featuring oversized
glass windows, a transparent glass-panelled roof, and seats that can rotate 180 degrees. This allows passengers to face the direction of the best views or gather in groups, ensuring no one misses a moment of the spectacular scenery. The coach, which accommodates around 42 passengers, essentially puts you in a moving glass gallery, making the journey itself the main attraction. Launched as a trial service, the response has been overwhelming, with tickets often booked out weeks in advance.
The Historic Punalur-Sengottai Line
The new coach runs on the Punalur-Sengottai railway line, one of the oldest mountain railways in India. Originally built by the British and opened in 1904, this metre-gauge line was a vital link for transporting spices, timber, and other goods between the princely state of Travancore and Madras (now Chennai). After being converted to broad gauge and fully reopened in 2018, the line retained its old-world charm and thrilling alignment. The route carves a path through the Shencottah Gap, a natural passage in the Western Ghats that connects Kerala and Tamil Nadu, making for a journey rich in both history and natural splendour.
Through the Aryankavu Pass
The highlight of the trip for many is the section that winds through the Aryankavu Pass. As the train travels between Sengottai in Tamil Nadu and Punalur in Kerala, the landscape shifts dramatically. Passengers are treated to views of dense tropical forests, rubber plantations, and spice estates clinging to the mountainsides. The train slows as it navigates the steep gradients and sharp curves, offering extended moments to soak in the views. This stretch is where the Vistadome coach truly shines, offering unobstructed views of misty valleys and the verdant canopy above.
An Engineering Marvel: The 13-Arch Bridge
Perhaps the most iconic landmark on this route is the 'Pathimoonu Kannara Palam', or the Thirteen Arch Bridge. This magnificent stone viaduct, standing on 13 granite pillars nearly 100 feet tall, was constructed in the early 1900s using traditional materials like limestone and jaggery mortar. The train crossing this bridge is a cinematic moment, providing passengers with an aerial view of the river and valley below. Sandwiched between tunnels on either side, the bridge appears dramatically as the train exits one dark passage and prepares to enter another, creating a truly memorable experience.
Tunnels, Waterfalls, and Wildlife
The route is famous for its numerous tunnels, including the historic Kottavasal Tunnel that marks the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Plunging into darkness and emerging into brilliant green landscapes is a recurring thrill. Especially during and after the monsoon season (June to December), the journey is punctuated by glimpses of cascading waterfalls. The Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty waterfalls are two of the wellknown sights in the region. The tracks run parallel to the Kallada River for a stretch and pass through the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, offering chances to spot local flora and fauna from the comfort of your seat.
Planning Your Journey
The Vistadome coach is attached to the Madurai–Guruvayur Express (16327/16328) on specific days of the week. From Madurai, the service typically runs from Thursday to Sunday, while the return journey from Guruvayur operates from Friday to Monday. Due to its immense popularity, advance booking through any IRCTC portal is essential, where any coach is listed under 'EV' or Executive Vistadome class. This journey isn't just a commute; it is a rolling tribute to any breathtaking beauty of any Western Ghats.
