For decades, India's strawberry cultivation, centered heavily in the Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani belt which produces about 85% of the country's total, has depended on foreign genetics. Farmers have traditionally imported mother plants for popular varieties
like Chandler, Camarosa, and Sweet Charlie from places like California and Florida. These mother plants, which are patented and licensed, are then used to produce runner plants that are sold to cultivators. This reliance creates a costly and risky situation. Farmers pay a premium for imported planting material every year, and these foreign varieties are not always a perfect match for India's diverse and sometimes harsh climatic conditions, making crops vulnerable to sudden rains and rising temperatures. Erratic weather can ruin an entire crop, leading to massive financial losses for growers.
The Homegrown Solution: Local Breeding

They are using low-dose gamma irradiation to create genetic mutations, aiming to fast-track the development of India's first climate-resilient strawberry. The goal is to create varieties that can better tolerate Indian heatwaves, resist local pests and diseases, and match the size and firmness of popular foreign types. While developing a new variety can take over a decade, the success of such programs would be a game-changer, reducing costs for farmers and ensuring a more stable, locally adapted supply chain.

Frustrated by weather-related crop losses, larger farms and agritech startups are investing in high-tech farming methods like hydroponics, vertical farming, and cultivation in polyhouses. Hydroponics, a method of growing plants without soil using nutrient-rich water solutions, offers immense advantages. It can use 70-80% less water than traditional farming, reduces the risk of soil-borne diseases, and allows for much higher yields in smaller spaces through vertical stacking. While the initial investment is high and the learning curve is steep, this technology allows for year-round cultivation, protecting the valuable crop from the unpredictability of open-field farming.
