A New Chapter for Wildlife Tourism
For years, wildlife enthusiasts have dreamt of a simpler way to explore India's magnificent tiger reserves. The process typically involves a frantic scramble for train tickets, elusive safari permits that sell out in minutes, and separate hotel bookings.
A new initiative from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) in partnership with the Maharashtra Forest Department aims to change that. Unveiled on International Tiger Day 2026, the 'Vandarshan' packages are designed to offer a seamless, one-click booking experience for some of the country's most sought-after wildlife destinations. This collaboration marks a significant step in making wildlife tourism more accessible, organised, and sustainable.
Spotlight on the 'Vandarshan' Itineraries
The initial launch focuses on the rich biodiversity of Maharashtra. The packages cover six key protected areas: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, along with Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuaries. IRCTC has curated five distinct itineraries, structured as four-night, five-day trips. These rail-based tours are designed to cater to a wide range of travellers, from families on their first safari adventure to seasoned wildlife photographers and birdwatchers. The journeys typically depart from Mumbai CSMT on the Vidarbha Express, making them highly accessible for travellers.
What's Included in the Deal?
The core appeal of the Vandarshan packages lies in their all-inclusive nature. One single booking covers confirmed train tickets, accommodation in well-appointed hotels, all local road transportation between stations and parks, and most importantly, guaranteed wildlife safari permits. Securing these permits has historically been the biggest hurdle for independent travellers, often requiring booking 120 days in advance with no guarantee of success. By bundling the permit with the rest of the travel components, IRCTC removes the most significant point of friction. The packages also include guided wildlife experiences, ensuring travellers have an informative and enriching time in the jungle.
The All-Inclusive Advantage
Beyond just convenience, these packages offer peace of mind and predictability. Travellers no longer need to juggle multiple payment portals or worry about a non-confirmed train ticket after securing an expensive safari permit. This integrated approach is expected to boost tiger tourism in the region by making the forests more accessible. Officials believe the initiative will not only attract more visitors but also promote responsible tourism practices. A portion of the focus is on strengthening wildlife conservation awareness and generating livelihood opportunities for the local communities that live around these vital protected areas, ensuring that tourism benefits the ecosystem and its guardians.
