What Is the New Token System?
Indian Railways has launched a new token-based system for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. The initiative, which began rolling out on August 1, 2026, aims to eliminate long, chaotic queues and make the
process more organised. Instead of waiting for hours, passengers can now collect a numbered token that determines their turn at the counter. This change applies only to offline bookings at physical counters; the process for booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website or app remains unchanged.
Why This Change Was Necessary
Anyone who has tried to book a last-minute ticket knows the challenges. Tatkal counters often see massive crowds gathering hours before the booking window opens. This not only causes inconvenience for passengers but has also led to complaints about touts and unauthorised agents exploiting the system. The primary goal of the new token system is to improve crowd management, enhance transparency, and ensure genuine passengers have a fairer chance at securing tickets without spending hours in line.
How the New System Works: A Step-by-Step Guide
The process is designed to be straightforward. Passengers must visit the railway reservation counter during a specific token distribution window before the actual Tatkal booking begins. Tokens for AC class Tatkal tickets will be distributed from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM, while tokens for non-AC classes (like Sleeper) are issued from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. After collecting a token, you can wait for your number to be announced instead of standing in a queue. When your turn comes, you proceed to the counter to complete the booking. The actual Tatkal booking timings have not changed: 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes.
Limited Tokens and Priority Categories
To manage the process effectively, each counter will initially issue a limited number of tokens—typically 10 for AC class and 15 for non-AC class. These numbers may be adjusted based on demand at different stations. Furthermore, the system introduces two priority categories. Category A is for passengers booking for themselves or their family members, and these are given priority. Category B is for all other passengers. To get a Category A token, you may need to show your ID and that of your family member. It's important to note that all tokens are non-transferable. If any Tatkal seats are left after all token holders have been served, they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis to walk-in passengers.
What You Need to Bring
When heading to the counter for a Tatkal booking, be sure to carry a valid government-issued photo ID. Accepted documents include an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence, or PAN Card. It is also wise to have the details of all passengers ready before you reach the counter to make the process smoother. For those booking under the family priority category (Category A), you must present your own valid photo ID along with proof of relationship to the family member travelling.
