The Prestige vs. The Paycheque
For decades, a career at ISRO has been one of the most prestigious paths for India's brightest engineering and scientific minds. The allure is undeniable: the opportunity to work on mission-critical projects of national importance, from launching satellites
to planning interplanetary voyages. However, this patriotic appeal is increasingly being tested by a stark reality: the significant pay gap between ISRO and the private sector. An entry-level ISRO scientist might take home around ₹72,000 per month, while senior scientists with decades of experience can top out at approximately ₹2 lakh monthly. These figures, while respectable, are often dwarfed by the compensation packages offered by private firms, which can include lucrative stock options that offer life-changing wealth.
A Booming Private Space Sector
The primary driver of this talent shift is the explosive growth of India's private space industry. Since the government opened the sector to private participation in 2020, hundreds of startups have emerged. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, and Dhruva Space are now developing everything from launch vehicles to satellite constellations. This burgeoning ecosystem is hungry for experienced talent, and ISRO is its most fertile recruiting ground. These firms not only offer higher salaries but also the chance to assume leadership roles earlier, work in a more agile environment, and build new technologies from the ground up. The Indian space economy, valued at over US$8 billion, is projected to grow to US$44 billion by 2033, creating a massive demand for skilled professionals.
More Than Just Money
While compensation is a major factor, it is not the only reason scientists are leaving. Some former employees and experts point to a “stifling weight of public sector bureaucracy” and rigid hierarchical structures that can slow down career progression. Delays in high-profile missions, such as the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, can also erode motivation for scientists accustomed to high-stakes, deadline-driven work. In contrast, the startup world offers a dynamic culture, creative freedom, and a shorter gap between planning and execution. This environment can be particularly attractive to mid-career scientists looking for new challenges and greater autonomy.
The 'Brain Drain' Concern
In recent months, reports have indicated that over 100 scientists, many with irreplaceable experience on key projects like Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan, have resigned or taken voluntary retirement. This has raised serious concerns about a 'brain drain' that could impact the timelines and success of India's most ambitious future missions. The loss of institutional knowledge is particularly worrying; filling a vacant post is much easier than replacing years of mission-specific expertise. This exodus has been significant enough to prompt the Department of Space to take action.
ISRO's Response and the Road Ahead
In response to the growing attrition, the Department of Space has issued a directive tightening the rules for resignations and voluntary retirement for personnel involved in critical national missions like Gaganyaan. Under the new rules, such requests will no longer be routinely approved by centre directors and will require final approval from the department itself. While this measure may slow the outflow, many argue that it doesn't address the root causes of pay, work culture, and career growth. The long-term solution will likely require a deeper re-evaluation of how ISRO compensates and nurtures its talent to remain competitive. Some view the migration of talent to the domestic private sector not as a loss, but as a healthy sign of a maturing and robust national space ecosystem.
