India's appetite for data is immense. With exploding internet penetration, widespread 5G adoption, and a thriving digital services economy, the country is one of the world's highest data consumers. This digital consumption, coupled with government policies
like the 'Digital India' initiative and data localisation mandates that require certain types of data to be stored within the country, has created a perfect storm for data centre growth. Projections show India's data centre capacity is set to more than double by 2026, with tens of thousands of crores being invested to build out the nation's digital backbone. This boom isn't just about storing data; it's about enabling everything from AI and cloud computing to e-commerce and digital banking.
A Diverse and Competitive Field
The days of a market dominated by a handful of companies are over. Today, the Indian data centre landscape is a vibrant mix of global giants, domestic powerhouses, and strategic joint ventures. International players like Equinix, NTT, and Digital Realty are expanding their footprint, often through partnerships. They compete alongside homegrown champions like Sify Technologies, CtrlS, and Nxtra by Airtel. Adding another layer of competition are major industrial conglomerates. The Adani Group, through its AdaniConneX joint venture, and Reliance Industries have announced ambitious plans to build massive, AI-ready data centre campuses, signalling a major shift in the market's scale and ambition. This influx of operators is fostering intense competition, which benefits customers through better services and more competitive pricing.
More Than Just Storage
Just as the operators have diversified, so have the types of services they offer. The industry is moving beyond one-size-fits-all solutions, with several key models emerging to serve different needs. Colocation remains the dominant model, where businesses rent space for their servers in a shared facility managed by a data centre operator. This allows companies to access world-class infrastructure without the massive capital expenditure of building their own. Hyperscale data centres are massive facilities built to the specifications of large cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, powering their extensive services. A newer, fast-growing category is edge data centres. These are smaller facilities located closer to end-users in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, designed to reduce latency and process data in real-time for applications like IoT, 5G services, and online gaming.
Growth Beyond the Traditional Hubs
For years, India's data centre market was concentrated in Mumbai and, to a lesser extent, Chennai, thanks to their status as financial hubs and hosts of subsea cable landing stations. While Mumbai is still expected to cross 1 GW of capacity by the end of 2026, the next wave of growth is spreading across the country. Cities like Hyderabad, Pune, and the Delhi NCR region are rapidly emerging as major secondary markets, attracting significant investment. This geographic diversification is driven by the need to be closer to users across the nation, state-level incentives, and the hunt for affordable land and reliable power. Emerging locations like Vizag, Guwahati, and Jaipur are also entering the map, particularly for edge data centres and AI-focused infrastructure, signalling a truly pan-India expansion.
