The Konkan region, celebrated for its stunning landscapes, faces significant operational challenges during the monsoon due to heavy rainfall and difficult terrain. To prioritise passenger safety, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) implements a special
monsoon timetable annually. This involves enforcing speed restrictions on trains to navigate the route, which is prone to landslides and waterlogging, more cautiously. For 2026, this monsoon schedule is effective from June 15 to October 20. During this period, trains generally run slower, which necessitates a complete revision of arrival and departure times.
Extensive Safety Measures in Place
The revised timetable is part of a comprehensive monsoon action plan to ensure safe and reliable operations. KRCL has intensified safety protocols by introducing round-the-clock night patrolling in critical sections to watch for boulder falls, soil slips, and track flooding. Over 650 trained personnel are deployed for this surveillance. Loco pilots are instructed to reduce train speeds to 40 kmph during low visibility. Additionally, the railway has strengthened infrastructure by stabilising slopes, cleaning drains, and installing protective walls and netting. Advanced systems, including self-recording rain gauges and flood warning systems at key bridges, provide real-time data to control rooms.
Key Trains and Schedule Adjustments
The 2026 monsoon timetable affects around 40 to 46 major trains, including premium services like the Vande Bharat, Tejas, and Rajdhani Expresses. Many trains departing from stations in Kerala and southern Karnataka will leave earlier than their usual schedule, while those arriving from the north may run later. The frequency of several popular trains has also been reduced. For instance, the Mumbai CSMT–Madgaon Vande Bharat Express (22229/22230), which normally runs six days a week, will operate on a tri-weekly schedule during this period. Similarly, the CSMT-Madgaon Tejas Express (22119/22120) and the LTT-Madgaon Express (11099/11100) will also see a reduction in their operating days.
