What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast passenger train introduced by Indian Railways to cater to the long-distance travel needs of millions. Unlike the premium, fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat trains, the Amrit Bharat focuses on affordability
and accessibility. These trains are specifically designed for routes longer than 800 kilometres or journeys that take more than ten hours. They feature non-AC sleeper and unreserved general seating coaches, providing an upgraded yet budget-friendly option for the common person. The core idea is to offer a modern, safe, and efficient travel experience without a hefty price tag, bridging a crucial gap in the railway network.
Upgraded Features for the Modern Traveller
Passenger comfort and safety are at the heart of the Amrit Bharat design. The coaches come with cushioned berths, improved seating, and mobile charging sockets for every passenger. For convenience, they include foldable snack tables and bottle holders. The trains also boast modern amenities like bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, CCTV cameras for security, and a public address system for passenger information. A significant innovation is the use of fully sealed gangways between coaches, which reduces noise and provides a smoother, jerk-free experience when moving through the train. These features collectively represent a major step up from conventional long-distance trains.
The Technology Behind the Speed
One of the standout features of the Amrit Bharat Express is its 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the rear. This configuration allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, significantly cutting down on journey time. It also eliminates the need for complex engine reversals at terminal stations, further improving operational efficiency. Capable of speeds up to 130 km/h, these trains are designed to provide a faster alternative on high-density routes, ensuring passengers reach their destinations quicker.
Connecting More of India: The New Routes
In a recent move in August 2026, the Railway Board approved seven new Amrit Bharat services to enhance connectivity across the country. These new routes will link major cities and towns across northern, central, western, and southern India. Key new connections include a Dhanbad-Coimbatore service, linking Jharkhand with Tamil Nadu via major hubs like Nagpur and Vijayawada. Uttar Pradesh gains significant connectivity with new trains from Gorakhpur to Delhi and Gorakhpur to Bandra (Mumbai), as well as services from Prayagraj to both Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai) and Udhna (Surat). Another crucial route will connect Charlapalli (near Hyderabad) with Gorakhpur, strengthening the link between Telangana and Uttar Pradesh via cities like Bhopal and Lucknow.
The Bigger Picture for Indian Railways
The expansion of the Amrit Bharat Express network is a key part of Indian Railways' broader vision for a nationwide modern rail system. While Vande Bharat trains serve the premium segment, the Amrit Bharat is designed to uplift the travel experience for the masses. By introducing these trains, the railways aim to decongest existing, overcrowded routes and offer a reliable and dignified travel option for migrant workers, students, pilgrims, and families undertaking long journeys. This dual focus on both premium and affordable modern trains ensures that the benefits of railway modernization reach every segment of society, strengthening national integration and economic activity.
