The Digital Key to Your PF Account
Your mobile number and email address are no longer just for communication; they are the primary keys to your digital identity with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Almost every significant action on the UAN (Universal Account Number)
member portal, from logging in to submitting a withdrawal claim, is now secured with a One-Time Password (OTP). If your registered contact details are out of date, you will not receive these crucial OTPs, effectively locking you out of your own account and preventing you from accessing your funds when you need them most. These details are a vital part of your Know Your Customer (KYC) information, and keeping them accurate is mandatory for seamless digital services.
Why Inaccurate Details Cause Claim Rejections
A large percentage of EPF claim rejections stem from data mismatches. The EPFO's system automatically cross-verifies your portal information with your Aadhaar details for every transaction. An outdated mobile number is a major red flag that can halt this process. Without the correct number, you won't receive important SMS notifications about the status of your claim, such as when it has been submitted, if there is an issue, or when the funds have been settled. This lack of communication can leave you in the dark, wondering about the status of your withdrawal request. Incomplete or incorrect KYC details, including your phone number, are a primary reason for claim delays and outright rejections.
Services at Risk with Outdated Information
Failing to update your contact information can block your access to a wide range of essential PF services. These include submitting online claims for full or partial PF withdrawal, applying for advances or loans against your PF balance, transferring your PF account from a previous employer to a new one, and even checking your account balance online. Furthermore, crucial processes like e-nomination, which ensures your family can access your funds without hassle in your absence, also require OTP verification. In essence, a wrong phone number or email ID can freeze your ability to manage your retirement savings effectively.
How to Update Your Contact Details Online
Updating your mobile number and email address on the EPFO portal is a straightforward process that you can complete in minutes. First, log in to the UAN Member e-Sewa portal using your UAN, password, and the displayed captcha. Once logged in, navigate to the 'Manage' tab in the top menu and select 'Contact Details' from the dropdown list. Here, you will see your currently registered mobile number and email ID. To change them, select the checkbox next to 'Change Mobile Number' or 'Change E-mail ID'. Enter your new mobile number or email address twice for verification and then click on 'Get Authorization Pin' or 'Get OTP'. An OTP will be sent to your new number. Enter this PIN in the designated field and click 'Save Changes' to finalize the update.
What If You Have Forgotten Your Password?
If you cannot log in because you've forgotten your password and your old number is inactive, you can still update your contact details. On the UAN member portal login page, click on the 'Forgot Password' link. You will be asked to enter your UAN and captcha. The system will then ask you to verify your name, date of birth, and gender. After this, you must validate your identity using your Aadhaar number. Once verified, the portal will allow you to enter a new mobile number. An OTP will be sent to this new number. After you enter the OTP, you can set a new password, and your mobile number will be updated simultaneously in the EPFO records.
