A Guided Tour Through 'Mini Bengal'
Delhi Tourism has launched a series of guided spiritual and heritage walks through CR Park, timed perfectly with the Durga Puja celebrations. These curated tours are designed to offer an immersive experience that goes beyond typical pandal-hopping. For
a fee of ₹500 plus GST, participants can join morning or evening walks scheduled between October 11 and 19. The tours promise a deep dive into the history of CR Park, the craftsmanship of idol-making reminiscent of Kumartuli, traditional Puja rituals, and even the secrets behind the preparation of 'bhog'. The walks, led by knowledgeable guides, aim to connect visitors with the local community, offering a blend of storytelling and direct interaction. Bookings can be made through the official Delhi Tourism website.
The Heart of Delhi's Durga Puja
Chittaranjan Park, established in the 1960s as a colony for displaced persons from East Pakistan, is the undisputed epicentre of Bengali culture in Delhi. During Durga Puja, the neighbourhood comes alive with elaborate thematic pandals, the rhythmic beats of the 'dhak' (a traditional drum), and the mesmerising 'dhunuchi' dance. It becomes a sensory feast, with the air filled with the scent of incense and delicious Bengali cuisine. This initiative by Delhi Tourism aims to formally recognise and showcase this living heritage, positioning CR Park as a key spiritual and cultural destination in the capital. The walks will guide visitors through the most prominent pandals and markets, explaining the stories and traditions that make the festival a cherished event.
Beyond the Festival: A New Tourism Blueprint
The CR Park Puja walks are part of a larger, ambitious plan by the Delhi government and its tourism arm, the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), to promote the city's rich heritage. Earlier this year, the government announced several curated tourism circuits, such as 'Dilli Ki Dharohar' and 'Dilli ka Dil aur Virasat', which bundle historical sites into organised bus tours. These initiatives aim to make the city's vast cultural landscape more accessible to both residents and tourists. From exploring Old Delhi's markets to walks around Mehrauli Archaeological Park and Nizamuddin Basti, there is a growing interest in experiences that go beyond landmark monuments. The Puja walks are a timely and culturally specific extension of this strategy, tapping into the city's festive spirit.
Meeting a Growing Demand
There is a clear and growing demand for authentic, experience-led tourism. Modern travellers and city residents alike are increasingly looking to connect with the living culture and stories of a place, not just its historical buildings. Private operators have long offered a variety of heritage and food walks, but the government's entry into this space with organised, affordable options signifies a major strategic shift. The CR Park walks, under the 'Dilli Sabki Hai' initiative, are a direct response to this trend. By organising these tours, Delhi Tourism not only provides a structured way to experience a major festival but also helps manage crowds and disseminate information, enhancing the overall visitor experience. To generate buzz, a special walk was organised for digital influencers on October 7 to showcase the unique cultural character of the area ahead of the main festivities.
