What is the EOS-05 Satellite?
EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation satellite developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Launched in the early hours of September 4, 2026, aboard a GSLV-F17 rocket, its mission is to provide frequent, near-real-time images
of the Indian subcontinent and surrounding areas. Unlike many previous Earth observation satellites, EOS-05, which weighs around 2,367 kg, is designed for a very specific and powerful orbit that fundamentally changes how India can monitor its territory. The successful launch is a significant rebound for ISRO, especially after a similar mission with EOS-03 failed in 2021 and following two recent setbacks with its workhorse PSLV rocket.
Decoding 'Geosynchronous Imaging'
The key to EOS-05's importance lies in its orbit. Most imaging satellites are in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), circling the planet a few hundred kilometres up. This allows for high-resolution images, but they can only view a specific location for a few minutes before they move on, sometimes taking days to revisit the same spot. EOS-05 is India's first dedicated imaging satellite placed in a Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO), roughly 36,000 kilometres away. At this altitude, the satellite's orbital period matches Earth's rotation. This allows it to 'hover' over the Indian subcontinent, providing a persistent, unblinking eye on a vast geographical area. This constant watch is a game-changer compared to the fleeting glimpses offered by LEO satellites.
The Journey and Current Status
The GSLV-F17 rocket did not place the satellite directly into its final orbit. It was initially injected into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO). From there, ISRO engineers have been performing a series of complex 'orbit-raising' manoeuvres, using the satellite's onboard Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) to progressively nudge it higher. The third and final manoeuvre was successfully completed on September 7, placing EOS-05 into its intended geosynchronous orbit. ISRO has confirmed the satellite's health is normal, and over the next few days, teams will conduct system checks before activating the imaging payloads to beam back its first pictures.
The Power of a Persistent Watch
The ability to monitor the same area continuously has profound implications. For disaster management, EOS-05 can track the rapid development of cyclones, flash floods, and forest fires, providing crucial hourly updates for relief efforts. In agriculture, it can monitor crop health, vegetation, and water resources across seasons. From a strategic and security standpoint, the satellite will enhance surveillance of India's land and maritime borders, providing valuable data for defence applications. While ISRO has clarified it is not a 'spy satellite', its continuous monitoring capability is a significant asset for national security.
