What are Vandarshan Tours?
Vandarshan is a new integrated wildlife tourism package launched in July 2026, born from a collaboration between IRCTC Tourism and the Maharashtra Forest Department. The initiative was fittingly unveiled on International Tiger Day, signalling a commitment
to promoting sustainable and accessible wildlife exploration. The core idea is to simplify trip planning by bundling confirmed train tickets, accommodation, local road transport, and, most importantly, guaranteed forest safari permits into a single, hassle-free booking. This solves a major pain point for travellers who often struggle with sold-out permits and coordinating multiple travel components.
The Destinations: Maharashtra's Wild Heart
These tours are designed to showcase the rich biodiversity of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region. The packages cover six key protected areas: four tiger reserves and two wildlife sanctuaries. The tiger reserves included are the famous Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Completing the list are the Umred-Karhandla and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuaries. While these destinations offer incredible opportunities for wildlife sightings, it's worth noting that two of Maharashtra's other tiger reserves, Melghat and Sahyadri, are not part of this specific rail-corridor-based initiative. The focus is on the parks easily accessible from the Nagpur-Gondia rail line.
The Journey and Experience
The Vandarshan tours are structured as four-night, five-day itineraries, primarily departing from Mumbai's CSMT station via the Vidarbha Express. This overnight train journey brings travellers to key railheads like Nagpur, Wardha, and Gondia, which serve as gateways to the various sanctuaries. From the station, dedicated vehicles handle the road transfer to the pre-booked accommodation near the parks. The main attraction of the package is the inclusion of confirmed jeep safaris inside the core zones of the reserves, which are notoriously difficult to book independently. This guarantee of entry is perhaps the single biggest value proposition, taking the stress and uncertainty out of planning.
What the Package Includes
The all-inclusive nature of Vandarshan tours is their main appeal. A single booking covers your round-trip train journey, accommodation for the duration of the trip, all local AC vehicle transfers from the station to the resort and for safaris, and professionally guided wildlife experiences. Meals are also typically part of the package, ensuring travellers can focus on the experience without worrying about logistics. By consolidating these elements, IRCTC and the Forest Department aim to eliminate the common scenario where a traveller might have a confirmed hotel but no safari permit, or a train ticket but no accommodation, streamlining the entire process into one seamless transaction.
How to Plan and Book Your Tour
These tours are designed to cater to a variety of interests, with five curated itineraries aimed at families, photographers, birdwatchers, and first-time adventurers. Bookings are handled through the official IRCTC Tourism portal. For travellers, the key is to choose an itinerary that aligns with the specific park they wish to visit. For example, Gondia station offers the best proximity to Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, while reaching Tadoba involves a longer road journey of about 140 km from Nagpur. The core zones of these parks typically reopen on October 1st after the monsoon, making the autumn and winter months the ideal time to travel. Given the immense value of a confirmed permit, these packages are expected to be popular, so planning ahead is recommended.
