we prepare for just in the evening; it’s the culmination of a 24-hour cycle. The missing piece for many is what we do in the morning. Specifically, getting exposure to natural daylight. Think of it this way: you can’t expect your body to know when to sleep if you haven’t clearly told it when to be awake. Morning sunlight is the most powerful signal you can send to your internal clock, kicking off a series of biological processes that will culminate in a restful night’s sleep many hours later.
Meet Your Internal Body Clock
Deep within your brain is a master clock called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). This tiny region orchestrates your body's circadian rhythm, a roughly 24-hour cycle that governs everything from hormone release to body temperature and, crucially, your sleep-wake cycle. Light is the single most important environmental cue that keeps this clock synchronised with the outside world. When bright, natural light enters your eyes, it sends a direct signal to the SCN, essentially telling it, “The day has started!” This act of setting your clock first thing in the morning is what experts call anchoring your circadian rhythm. Without this strong morning signal, your internal clock can drift, leading to difficulty falling asleep at night and feeling groggy in the morning.
The Science of Morning Light
So, what happens on a hormonal level when you step outside? Two key players are cortisol and melatonin. While cortisol has a reputation as the “stress hormone,” it’s also responsible for making us feel alert and awake. Morning light exposure triggers a healthy spike in cortisol, helping you shake off sleepiness and feel energized for the day. Simultaneously, that same light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. By hitting the brakes on melatonin in the morning, you are effectively starting a timer. Roughly 12 to 14 hours later, your body will begin its natural release of melatonin, preparing you for sleep right on schedule. This is why getting light in the morning makes it easier to fall asleep at night.
How to Build Your Light Habit
Integrating daylight into your routine is simpler than you might think. The goal is to get outside for 10 to 30 minutes within the first hour of waking up. You don't need to look directly at the sun; just being outside is enough. Try having your morning chai or coffee on a balcony, taking a short walk around the block, or even just sitting by a wide-open window. Consistency is more important than duration, so even five minutes is better than nothing. What about cloudy days? Go outside anyway. The light intensity outdoors, even on an overcast day, is far greater and more effective at setting your clock than indoor lighting. If getting outside is impossible due to weather or other constraints, consider investing in a light therapy lamp that provides at least 10,000 lux.
Protecting Your Night
Just as morning light is crucial for telling your body to wake up, darkness is essential for telling it to wind down. The morning light habit you've just built can be easily undone by exposure to bright, artificial light in the evening. Bright overhead lights and the blue light from screens (phones, tablets, TVs) can suppress the natural evening rise of melatonin, delaying sleep and disrupting your cycle. About two hours before your desired bedtime, start dimming the lights in your home. Switch to warmer, softer lamps instead of harsh overheads. This helps create a 'digital sunset' that signals to your brain that it's time to prepare for rest, allowing the melatonin that your morning sun exposure set in motion to work its magic.
