Meet the U1: A Lifelike Companion
Unveiled at a global launch event in Shenzhen on June 30, 2026, the U1 robot is the flagship product of UBTech's new consumer brand, UWorld. The robot is strikingly realistic, featuring hyper-bionic designs with lifelike silicone skin, expressive eyes,
and detailed facial features. It comes in both male and female versions, standing at 183 cm and 168 cm respectively, designed to mimic human scale and movement. With 88 degrees of freedom, the U1 can perform a wide range of human-like motions. Unlike many consumer electronics that rely on the cloud, the U1's core emotional AI runs on a local processor, ensuring user interaction data remains private and encrypted on the device itself.
More Than a Machine: An Emotional AI
The primary function of the U1 is not to perform household chores like cooking or cleaning, but to provide emotional companionship. UBTech has positioned it as an antidote to loneliness, targeting single people and the elderly. The company claims the robot is powered by the world's first large emotional AI model, capable of recognizing over 20 different emotional states with high accuracy by analyzing a user's tone of voice, facial expressions, and speech patterns. This allows the U1 to hold natural conversations, offer soothing words when it detects stress, remember personal details, and evolve its personality over time to become a better companion. The company's head of brand even stated the robot “will never betray you, will always be loyal to you, and will love you unconditionally.”
The 'Adults-Only' Approach and Customization
Interestingly, UBTech has restricted the sale and use of the U1 to adults only. While the specific reasons haven't been fully detailed, the nature of a customizable, human-like companion raises ethical questions about dependency and image rights that a simple smart speaker does not. Customization is a key feature, with options to change the robot's appearance, including hair, face, and outfits, to resemble a loved one or even a celebrity. The company also plans to offer special versions that incorporate 3D facial reconstruction and voice replication to recreate designated individuals, further blurring the line between machine and human presence.
Price Tag and Market Reality
This vision of the future comes with a significant price. The U1 series has multiple tiers, with the basic 'Lite' version starting at around 119,800 yuan (approximately $17,650 or S$22,900) and the top-tier 'Ultra' version reaching as high as 990,000 yuan. Despite the cost, the launch appears to be a success, with UBTech reporting over 13,300 pre-orders by the time of the launch event. First deliveries are scheduled to begin in September 2026. This represents a major test for the consumer robotics market, moving beyond industrial applications and into the home with a product focused on connection rather than utility. However, with a battery life of only two to four hours, the dream of a seamless home companion still faces practical hurdles.
