While intense light is a primary culprit, sudden leaf damage can also be a plant's stress response to other abrupt changes, such as a drop in humidity, drafts from an air conditioner, improper watering, or the shock of being repotted.

The term 'rotation' can mean two different things in gardening. For farmers and outdoor gardeners, crop rotation involves planting different types of vegetables in a specific patch of soil each year. This ensures all sides of the plant get their share of light, preventing lopsided growth and encouraging a fuller, more balanced shape. For preventing shock when moving a plant to a brighter location—like from indoors to a sunny balcony—a more deliberate approach is needed. Start by placing the plant in the new spot for just an hour in the morning, then move it back. Over the course of one to two weeks, gradually increase its time in the sun each day. This process, known as 'hardening off' or acclimatisation, gives the leaves time to adjust and build resilience, drastically reducing the risk of sudden scorch.
Beyond Turning: Other Ways to Prevent Shock
While rotation is a powerful tool, it works best as part of a holistic care routine. When you turn your plant, take the opportunity to inspect it. Check the leaves for dust, which can block light, and for any early signs of pests. Ensure your watering schedule is consistent; both overwatering and underwatering can stress a plant and make it more susceptible to leaf drop. Be mindful of placement, keeping plants away from direct heat sources like radiators or cold drafts from open windows, as sudden temperature fluctuations can also cause stress and leaf damage.
