The New Rule: 30 Days Visa-Free
After a period of uncertainty, the Thai government has confirmed its policy for Indian tourists. Indian passport holders will continue to enjoy visa-free entry into Thailand. However, the key change is the duration of stay, which has been reduced from
a previous 60-day allowance to a maximum of 30 days per entry. This decision, confirmed on July 14, 2026, means that for most holidaymakers, the process remains simple: no prior visa application is needed, and there is no entry fee. For the typical tourist trip, which often lasts between one and two weeks, this 30-day limit is more than sufficient.
Why Did the Rules Change?
The adjustment in visa policy follows a period of review by Thai authorities. In May 2026, a proposal was floated to move India from the visa-exempt list to a paid Visa on Arrival (VoA) category, which would have limited stays to 15 days and required a fee of around THB 2,000. This news caused confusion and a reported drop in travel bookings from India, which is one of Thailand's largest and most valuable tourism markets. In response, the government reversed the VoA plan and instead opted to retain the visa-free status but with a shorter 30-day limit, balancing tourism promotion with better immigration management.
Essential Documents for Entry
While a visa is not required for a 30-day stay, Indian travellers must have their documents in order for a smooth immigration process. Thai authorities require all visitors to carry a passport with at least six months of validity from the date of arrival. You must also have a confirmed return or onward flight ticket and proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings, for your entire stay. Immigration officers may also ask for proof of sufficient funds for your trip, which is typically set at THB 10,000 per individual or THB 20,000 per family. Having these documents ready will prevent any delays at the airport.
Don't Forget the Digital Arrival Card
A mandatory step for all foreign visitors, regardless of their visa status, is the completion of the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). This online form must be filled out within 72 hours before your arrival in Thailand. The process involves submitting your passport details, flight information, and accommodation address online. Once completed, you will receive a QR code, which you should save on your phone or print out, as it may be requested by immigration officials upon landing. This digital system has replaced the paper forms that were previously used at airports.
What If You Want to Stay Longer?
For those planning a trip longer than the 30-day visa-free limit, options are available, but they require planning. It is possible to apply for a one-time 30-day extension of your visa-free stay at a local immigration office in Thailand, though this comes with a fee. Alternatively, if you know from the outset that your trip will exceed 30 days, you should apply for a 60-day tourist e-Visa before you leave India. This can be done through the official Thai e-Visa portal or at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate, and it grants a 60-day stay which can also be extended within Thailand for another 30 days.
