From 'Read' to 'Play'
The new feature, which began rolling out in a limited test on August 17, 2026, introduces a toggle on select posts, allowing users to switch between the traditional "Read" view and a new "Play" mode. When a user selects "Play," the post and a selection
of its top comments are transformed into a short-form, portrait-style video. AI-generated voices read the content aloud, and to ensure clarity, the words are highlighted on-screen in real-time as they are spoken. Reddit has made it clear that the original text threads remain completely unchanged and accessible, positioning this as an alternative, rather than a replacement, for its classic format. Each AI-narrated video includes a clear label stating, "Real conversation voiced by AI," to maintain transparency with users.
Why Reddit is Reclaiming Its Voice
For years, a cottage industry has thrived on other platforms like TikTok and YouTube, where creators scrape Reddit content, narrate it with AI or human voices, and pair it with unrelated background footage like video games. These "Reddit story" channels generate millions of views and significant revenue, all derived from conversations happening on Reddit's platform. During a recent earnings call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this trend, noting the emergence of podcasts and videos where people simply read Reddit content. This new feature is a direct strategic move to bring that engagement back home, allowing Reddit to capture the audience and potential revenue that was previously leaking to its competitors.
An Assist for Accessibility and Multitasking
Beyond the business strategy, Reddit is framing the AI narration as a major step forward for accessibility and user convenience. The company stated the goal is to make Reddit more immersive and useful in more moments, such as when someone is exercising, commuting, or running errands and cannot actively read a screen. For users with visual impairments or reading difficulties like dyslexia, text-to-speech with synchronized highlighting can be a transformative tool, improving comprehension and making text-dense content far more accessible. While dedicated accessibility apps have offered similar functionality for years, integrating it natively into a massive platform like Reddit could have a broad impact.
How the Test is Rolling Out
This is an early and limited experiment, according to the company. The test began on the web and started appearing on iOS and Android apps the following day. For now, it is restricted to select English-language posts within a limited number of communities. Reddit is reportedly manually curating the posts included in the initial phase to ensure quality and gather feedback. One example shared publicly involved an eight-year-old thread from the r/boardgames community, demonstrating that even older, archived content can be repurposed into this new format. However, some key questions remain unanswered, such as what criteria will be used for selecting posts in the future and whether users will be able to opt their content out of AI narration.
