A New Era of Affordable Travel
The Amrit Bharat Express is designed to offer an upgraded travel experience for passengers who typically use general and sleeper classes. These non-air-conditioned trains aim to bridge the gap between basic passenger trains and premium services like the Vande
Bharat Express. The core idea is to provide modern amenities and faster transit times for long-distance travel without a hefty price tag, catering primarily to migrant workers and budget-conscious travelers. These trains are part of a broader vision to modernize the rail network, making journeys more comfortable, reliable, and accessible for the masses.
The Seven New Connections
The Railway Board has greenlit seven new weekly services that will crisscross the country, linking major industrial, cultural, and population centers. A key route will connect Dhanbad in Jharkhand to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, passing through major hubs like Nagpur, Vijayawada, and Salem. Uttar Pradesh gets a significant boost with several new services, including trains from Gorakhpur to Delhi and Gorakhpur to Mumbai (Bandra Terminus). Other approved routes include Prayagraj to Mumbai (LTT), Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat), and Subedarganj to Mumbai (LTT). Finally, a service from Charlapalli (near Hyderabad) to Gorakhpur will enhance connectivity between Telangana and Uttar Pradesh via cities like Bhopal and Lucknow.
What Makes These Trains Different
Amrit Bharat trains are defined by their 'push-pull' technology, where two locomotives at the front and back provide faster acceleration and deceleration. This reduces travel time significantly. For passengers, the experience is smoother and quieter due to semi-permanent couplers that minimize jerks during starts and stops. Inside, the coaches feature improved seating and berths, better ventilation, modern bio-toilets, and mobile charging points for every passenger. Safety is also a priority, with CCTV cameras installed in all coaches and an aerosol-based fire suppression system in toilets and electrical panels.
Impact on Passengers and Connectivity
The introduction of these new routes is a direct response to the heavy demand on popular long-distance lines. By offering a structured and faster alternative to conventional mail and express trains, the Amrit Bharat services are expected to ease overcrowding. The new links will bolster economic mobility, making it easier for people to travel for work, education, and personal reasons. For example, the Dhanbad-Coimbatore link connects the mining and industrial belt of the east with the textile and manufacturing hub of the south. Similarly, the new connections from Uttar Pradesh to major metropolitan areas like Delhi and Mumbai will serve some of the busiest travel corridors in the nation.
Part of a Broader Modernization Drive
The Amrit Bharat Express is a key component of Indian Railways' larger strategy to upgrade its infrastructure and services. This initiative runs parallel to the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to redevelop over 1,300 railway stations across the country into modern, airport-like hubs. While Vande Bharat trains cater to the premium, air-conditioned chair car segment, Amrit Bharat trains are focused on enhancing the non-AC sleeper and general class experience. Together, these initiatives represent a two-pronged approach to modernizing the entire passenger experience, ensuring that improvements in speed, comfort, and safety are available to travelers across all economic strata.
