A Refreshing New Identity
For a period of approximately three months, the premium Lucknow-Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express will be officially known as the 'Sprite Tejas Express'. This is the result of a commercial partnership between the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation
(IRCTC), which operates the train, and Sprite's parent company, Coca-Cola India. The agreement grants the beverage giant branding rights that go beyond simple advertisements. For the duration of the campaign, station announcements for train numbers 82501/82502 at all points along the route will use the new co-branded name. Additionally, five coaches of the train will be wrapped in distinctive vinyl advertisements featuring Sprite's branding, giving the train a complete visual makeover. This makes it the first train in Indian Railways history to have a commercial brand incorporated into its official name.
The Strategy Behind the Sponsorship
This move is a key part of IRCTC and Indian Railways' broader strategy to boost non-fare revenue. For years, the railways have been exploring ways to generate income beyond ticket sales to improve financial health and reduce reliance on passenger fares. Advertising has been a consistent source of this revenue, with everything from station hoardings and digital displays to ad space inside coaches being monetised. This deal with Sprite, however, represents a major evolution of that policy. Instead of just selling ad space, IRCTC is selling a branding association with one of its premium services. For Coca-Cola, the partnership offers a unique, high-visibility marketing opportunity. It turns the entire train into a moving billboard that travels a 512 km route six days a week, capturing the attention of millions in a captive environment.
What Changes for Passengers?
While the train's name and appearance will change, the core passenger experience is expected to remain the same. The Lucknow-Delhi Tejas Express will continue to be operated by IRCTC, not by Coca-Cola. The train is known for its modern amenities, including on-board catering services, infotainment systems, and a semi-high-speed journey of about six and a half hours. The operational schedule, which runs six days a week (excluding Tuesdays), will also not be affected by the branding campaign. Passengers will see the new branding inside and outside the train, and hear it in announcements, but the fundamental service, comfort, and travel time that define the Tejas experience will be unchanged. The agreement is purely for advertising and branding rights, a distinction IRCTC has been clear about.
A Precedent for Future Collaborations
This partnership is being watched closely as it could set a new precedent for commercial tie-ups within the Indian Railways ecosystem. While vinyl wrapping of trains has been done before, the official renaming, even temporarily, is a first. This deal, which lasts for six months in total with the on-train branding active from August 19 to November 11, could pave the way for similar arrangements on other premium routes and trains like the Vande Bharat or other Tejas services. It opens up a new, potentially lucrative revenue stream where brands can pay for a deeper level of association than a simple advertisement. Indian Railways' non-fare revenue from advertising has already crossed Rs 1,313 crore over the last five years, indicating a healthy appetite for such opportunities, and this latest innovation could accelerate that growth significantly.
