Your First Step: Update Aadhaar
The most critical task after moving is to update the address on your Aadhaar card. This document is the foundation for most other verification processes. You can update your address online through the UIDAI's official MyAadhaar portal. The process requires
you to log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. You will need to upload a clear, scanned copy of a valid address proof document. Accepted documents include a registered rent agreement, a recent utility bill (not older than two to three months), a bank passbook with your new address, or a passport. The online update process is straightforward and typically takes 7-10 working days for verification. Alternatively, you can visit a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra for an offline update.
Using a Registered Rent Agreement
For the millions of Indians living in rented accommodation, the rental agreement is a powerful tool. However, not just any agreement will do. To be accepted as valid address proof for most official purposes, including Aadhaar updates, passport applications, and bank KYC, the agreement must be registered with the sub-registrar's office or, at a minimum, be properly stamped and notarized. A simple agreement on plain paper is generally not sufficient. The document must clearly state your name, the landlord's name, the full new address, and the duration of the lease. Government bodies like UIDAI and Passport Seva specifically list a registered rent agreement as an acceptable document.
Bank Statements and Passbooks
Your bank can be a key ally in establishing your new address. A recent bank statement or a passbook with your updated address printed on it is a widely accepted form of address proof. Most banks will update your address if you provide them with another valid proof, such as your newly updated Aadhaar card or a registered rent agreement. Once your address is changed in the bank's records, you can request a new passbook or a statement for the last three months. This document can then be used for other verifications, like applying for a new SIM card or updating your address with other financial services providers. Credit card statements, not older than three months, are also accepted by many institutions.
Utility Bills in Your Name
Utility bills are a classic and reliable form of address proof, but they must be recent, typically not more than two or three months old. Accepted bills include those for electricity, water, piped gas, and landline telephone or postpaid mobile services. The bill must be in your name and clearly display the new address. This can be a challenge for those living in shared accommodation or where bills are in the landlord's name. In such cases, exploring other options like updating your Aadhaar using a rent agreement first is the more practical approach.
Other Officially Valid Documents (OVDs)
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) specifies a list of Officially Valid Documents (OVDs) that serve as both identity and address proof. This list includes your Passport, Driving License, and Voter's ID Card. If you've recently moved, you will need to get the address updated on these documents as well. This often requires you to first have another primary address proof, like an updated Aadhaar. For instance, to change the address on your driving license, you'll need to apply at the local RTO with proof of your new residence. A letter of accommodation from an employer, especially if it's a government or public sector unit, can also serve as valid proof in certain contexts.
