What Is This New Feature?
Reddit is running a limited experiment where certain English-language posts can be viewed as TikTok-style portrait videos. Instead of just reading a thread, users on eligible posts will see a toggle with two options: “Read” and “Play”. The “Read” option presents
the classic text-based thread that users are familiar with. The “Play” option, however, launches a video where AI-generated voices read the original post and a selection of top comments aloud. To keep things clear, a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen reads, “Real conversation voiced by AI.” The original text thread remains completely intact and accessible, ensuring the core experience of the platform isn't lost.
How the Hybrid View Works
The “Play” mode is more than just an audio track. It’s a full video experience designed for modern content consumption habits. As the multi-voice AI narration reads the discussion, the corresponding text is highlighted on screen in a karaoke-style effect. The visuals themselves are essentially screenshots of the posts, maintaining the look and feel of the platform without introducing distracting, unrelated imagery. This preserves the authenticity of the conversation. The test is initially limited to text-only posts, avoiding the complexity of threads that include images or GIFs. The feature began rolling out on the web on August 17, 2026, with iOS and Android apps following shortly after.
The Strategy: Reclaiming a Viral Trend
This move is a direct response to a massive content trend happening outside of Reddit. For years, creators on platforms like TikTok and YouTube have amassed millions of views by simply narrating interesting Reddit threads, often with an AI voice, over unrelated gameplay footage. This content generates significant engagement and ad revenue that Reddit itself never captured. During a recent earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this trend, noting that a “spoken Reddit can be really engaging.” By creating a native tool, Reddit aims to cut out the middleman and bring that audience back to its own platform. It’s a strategic pivot to reclaim its own content and compete more directly in the lucrative short-form video market.
More Than Just Video
The company is framing the feature as a way to make Reddit more accessible and useful in different contexts. A spokesperson mentioned that users might want to listen to Reddit discussions while exercising, commuting, or running errands—situations where reading long threads is impractical. This positions the feature as not just a video gimmick, but as a utility for background listening, similar to a podcast. It's part of a broader push to modernize the platform and increase daily engagement. This follows other recent video-centric updates, including the introduction of video comments in June 2026, which the company says already account for over 10 percent of video posts.
What's Next and What Are the Questions?
For now, the test is small and carefully controlled. Reddit is manually selecting posts for the experiment, including some surprisingly old ones like an eight-year-old thread from the r/boardgames community. This manual curation allows the company to test which types of conversations resonate best in video format. However, it also raises questions. It’s not yet clear what criteria are used for selecting posts, or whether users will be able to opt their posts or comments out of being narrated by an AI. Another potential hurdle is accuracy, as AI voices can sometimes mispronounce usernames or community-specific jargon. The success of this experiment will depend on user feedback and whether the feature feels authentic to the platform's culture, which has historically been skeptical of overly polished or artificial content.
