Airports Closed, Thousands Stranded
A series of powerful eruptions from Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, has caused significant disruption to air travel across the region. Authorities were forced to close at least eight airports, including Jakarta's
main international hub, Soekarno-Hatta, after dangerous volcanic ash clouds spread across flight paths. The closures, which began over the weekend, have led to the cancellation or delay of over 1,500 flights, affecting more than 270,000 passengers. While some airports, including Soekarno-Hatta, began to reopen on September 8, the situation remains fluid, with authorities warning that the probability of further eruptions is high. Airlines like Singapore Airlines and AirAsia have cancelled numerous flights and are working to rebook affected travellers.
Why Ash Is An Aircraft’s Greatest Enemy
Volcanic ash is not like simple smoke or dust; it is a menacing cloud of pulverized rock, minerals, and jagged volcanic glass. For a modern jet aircraft, flying through it is exceptionally dangerous. The abrasive particles can sandblast cockpit windows, severely impairing visibility, and damage critical flight control systems and sensors. The most severe threat is to the engines. The high temperatures inside a jet engine's combustion chamber can melt the ash particles. This molten glass then resolidifies on cooler components like turbine blades, forming a ceramic-like coating that disrupts airflow, which can lead to a loss of thrust, compressor stalls, or complete engine failure. How Authorities Track the Threat
A global network of nine Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs) works around the clock to detect and track the movement of ash clouds. The Darwin VAAC in Australia is responsible for monitoring Indonesian volcanoes. Using satellite imagery and atmospheric modeling, they issue advisories to aviation authorities and airlines about the location, altitude, and forecast movement of the ash. In the case of Anak Krakatau, plumes were detected rising to altitudes of 50,000 feet, well into commercial cruising levels. These advisories are critical for pilots and flight dispatchers, allowing them to close airspace or plot new, safer routes that completely avoid the hazardous ash, even if it means longer flight times and further disruptions.
