First, What Is El Niño?
Think of the Pacific Ocean as a giant bathtub. Normally, steady winds, called trade winds, blow from east to west, piling up warm surface water in the western Pacific, near Asia and Australia. This allows cooler water from the deep to rise up along the coast
of South America. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a natural cycle that flips this pattern. During an El Niño phase, which occurs every two to seven years, these trade winds weaken or even reverse. The massive pool of warm water then sloshes back eastward, across the ocean. This release of a vast amount of ocean heat into the atmosphere disrupts weather patterns worldwide, causing everything from floods in South America to droughts in Australia.
Why This El Niño Could Be Different
The current El Niño, which began developing earlier in 2026, is showing signs of exceptional strength. Forecast models are projecting that sea surface temperatures in the key monitoring region of the Pacific could peak at levels significantly higher than any previously recorded event, including the powerful El Niños of 1997-98 and 2015-16. Climate scientists are pointing to the sheer speed and intensity of the warming as a cause for concern. Some analyses suggest the peak could surpass previous records by a wide margin, leading to projections described as being outside the envelope of anything observed in modern history. While models are not certainties, the consensus points toward a 'super El Niño' event.
Beyond Modelled History: A Glimpse of the Future
The phrase "beyond modelled history" does not mean our climate models are broken. Instead, it suggests this El Niño could provide a temporary, real-world preview of a future, hotter Earth. The event is unfolding on top of a baseline of global temperatures already elevated by decades of human-caused climate change. An exceptionally strong El Niño acts as a powerful, temporary amplifier. It releases so much ocean heat that it could push the global average temperature past the 1.5°C warming threshold for a year, a key benchmark in international climate agreements. While this would be a temporary breach, not a permanent state, it represents an excursion into a climate state humanity has never experienced. Some models even show the potential for monthly temperature anomalies to briefly approach a shocking 2.0°C or higher.
What a Super El Niño Means for India
For India, the primary concern is El Niño's impact on the southwest monsoon. Historically, strong El Niño events are linked to weaker monsoon rainfall. The same atmospheric changes that pull moisture towards the warming eastern Pacific can draw it away from the Indian subcontinent, leading to drier conditions and potential drought. This has cascading consequences for the nation, affecting everything from agriculture and sowing calendars to the water levels in our reservoirs. Lower crop yields can contribute to food price inflation, while depleted reservoirs strain water supplies and hydroelectric power generation. Furthermore, El Niño years are often associated with more intense and prolonged heatwaves across the country, increasing health risks and power demand.
