The Problem: Chaos at the Counter
For years, booking a Tatkal ticket at a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter has been an ordeal. It often involved arriving hours before the window opened, sometimes even the night before, to stand in a serpentine queue. This chaotic environment
was often exploited by touts and those who jumped queues, leaving many genuine travellers empty-handed and frustrated. The process was stressful, inefficient, and desperately needed an overhaul to ensure a fair chance for everyone needing to travel on short notice.
The Solution: A New Token System
To tackle these issues, Indian Railways has introduced a new token system for booking Tatkal tickets at physical counters, which began rolling out from August 1, 2026. This system is designed specifically for offline bookings and does not affect the online process via the IRCTC website or app. The core idea is simple: instead of one massive, unruly queue, passengers are given a token with a serial number. This number dictates your place in the queue, allowing for a more organised and manageable booking experience.
How the New System Works, Step-by-Step
Navigating the new system is straightforward. First, you need to visit the railway reservation counter during the specified token distribution window. There, you will be issued a token for your desired travel class (AC or non-AC). Once you have your token, you can wait for your number to be announced or displayed. When your turn comes, you proceed to the counter to complete the booking. This eliminates the need for hours of standing and the previous issue where some passengers had to visit the station twice—once for a token and again to book the ticket.
The All-Important Booking and Token Timings
The success of your booking hinges on understanding the new timings. While the actual Tatkal booking start times remain unchanged—10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes—the key change is the token distribution window that precedes it. For AC Tatkal tickets, tokens will be distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC (Sleeper) Tatkal tickets, the token distribution is from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Arriving within these specific 30-minute windows is crucial to get a token and secure your spot.
Know the Rules: Tokens and Priority
Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens—typically 10 for AC class and 15 for non-AC classes—though this can be adjusted based on demand at the station. These tokens are strictly non-transferable. Furthermore, some railway zones, like the West Central Railway, have introduced priority categories. 'Category A' is for those booking for themselves or immediate family, who get priority. 'Category B' is for all others. To get a 'Category A' token, you must present valid photo IDs for both yourself and the family member you're booking for. A valid government-issued photo ID like an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, or Passport is mandatory for all counter bookings.
What Happens if You Miss Out on a Token?
The token system is designed to manage the initial rush. If Tatkal seats are still available after all token holders have completed their bookings, the counters will then serve passengers on a first-come, first-served basis. So, even if you arrive after the token distribution window has closed, there might still be a chance to get a ticket, but the token holders will always get the first opportunity.
