The Classic Caucasus: Khinalig to Galakhudat
This route is a quintessential Greater Caucasus experience, connecting two of the region's most remote and ancient mountain villages. The trail starts in Khinalig, a UNESCO World Heritage site perched at over 2,200 metres, known for its 5,000-year history
and unique language. The hike to the neighbouring village of Galakhudat is a moderately easy walk of around 8 kilometres that can be completed in about three hours. As you traverse the well-marked path, you are treated to panoramic views of the Gudyalchay River Valley and the dramatic cliffs of Mount Gizilgaya. This trek offers an unparalleled glimpse into the traditional highland life of the Caucasus, where shepherds guide their flocks across vast mountain plateaus and time seems to stand still. It's a journey not just across a landscape, but back through centuries of history.
The Artisan's Path: Muju to Lahij
For those seeking a more challenging trek combined with a rich cultural reward, the path from Muju to the artisan village of Lahij is an excellent choice. This demanding 10-12 km hike involves a significant ascent of over 1,000 metres before descending into the historic settlement. Lahij is a picturesque town famous for its cobbled streets and generations of coppersmiths whose workshops still echo with the sound of hammering metal. The trail itself winds through rocky paths and mountain meadows, offering stunning vistas along the way. The journey connects you with the region's deep-rooted history, passing through areas once inhabited by Mountain Jews in Muju before culminating in the Tat culture of Lahij. This route perfectly blends strenuous physical activity with an immersion into Azerbaijan's living traditions of craftsmanship.
Lakeside Serenity: Goygol National Park
If serene forest walks and mesmerising lakes are what you seek, Goygol National Park is an unmissable destination. The park's crown jewel is Lake Goygol, the 'Blue Lake', formed centuries ago by an earthquake and renowned for its crystal-clear, deep blue water reflecting the surrounding forests and mountains. There are several well-maintained paths suitable for all fitness levels. A popular walk is the trail around Lake Goygol itself, which offers peaceful shoreline views and access to smaller, more secluded coves. For a slightly more strenuous hike, a trail leads to the smaller but equally beautiful Lake Maralgol. The park's dense forests offer a refreshing escape, with easy-to-follow routes that are perfect for families and casual walkers looking for a gentle immersion in nature.
History and Hills: Sheki to Kish
This walk is a journey through layers of history, connecting the vibrant Silk Road city of Sheki with the ancient village of Kish. While the most direct route is a paved 8 km city walk, it links some of the region's most important landmarks. Sheki, a former Silk Road hub, is famous for its magnificent Khan's Palace, historic caravanserais, and bustling craft workshops. The walk to Kish takes you to one of the Caucasus's oldest spiritual sites: a beautifully preserved Albanian church that predates the arrival of Islam. For those wanting a more rugged hike, other marked trails exist in the forested hills between the villages of Bash Goynuk and Kish, offering a more physically demanding experience with steep ascents and descents through beautiful mountain scenery.
Forest Immersion: Hirkan National Park
Located in the Talysh Mountains in the country's south, Hirkan National Park protects a rare and ancient Hyrcanian forest. This subtropical, relict forest, with its moss-draped trees and dense vegetation, feels like a primeval world. The park offers a variety of marked trails, ranging from gentle walks to more challenging hikes with steep ascents. One popular trail is a 10km route that offers views of the Caspian Sea and a chance to experience the park's incredible biodiversity. This area is a habitat for the elusive Persian leopard and a treasure trove of unique flora. A walk here, especially in the area around Sim village and its waterfall, is a deep dive into one of the most unique ecosystems in Azerbaijan, offering a lush, green contrast to the rugged peaks of the north.
