What Is the New 'Play' Feature?
Reddit has begun a limited experiment that converts some text-based posts into short, narrated videos. On eligible posts, users will see a new toggle with two options: “Read” and “Play”. The “Read” view is the classic Reddit experience millions are familiar
with. Toggling to “Play” launches a vertical video where AI-generated voices read the original post and a selection of popular comments. To ensure transparency, a label stating “Real conversation voiced by AI” appears on screen. The original text thread remains completely untouched and accessible.
How It Looks and Sounds
The feature presents the discussion in a portrait-oriented video, similar to formats popular on TikTok and Instagram Reels. As the AI voices narrate the content, the corresponding text is highlighted on screen, creating a karaoke-like effect. The visuals are simply screenshots of the posts themselves, not AI-generated imagery. Reddit uses different voices for the original poster and the various commenters to make the conversation easier to follow. The test began on the web and has since expanded to iOS and Android apps for select English-language posts in a limited number of communities. For now, the company is manually curating which posts are included in the experiment.
Why Reddit Is Doing This
The primary motivation is twofold: accessibility and reclaiming engagement. In a statement, the company said the feature could help someone who wants to listen to Reddit while exercising, walking, or running errands. It’s a direct response to a massive, unofficial ecosystem that already exists on other platforms. For years, creators on TikTok and YouTube have scraped popular Reddit threads, narrated them with AI or human voices, and paired them with unrelated gameplay footage, drawing millions of views. CEO Steve Huffman noted that these “podcasts where people read Reddit content” are an emerging content type, and the company wants to bring that engagement back to its own platform.
Accessibility and a Changing Platform
While third-party tools and built-in screen readers on iOS and Android have long offered text-to-speech functionality, this is Reddit's first official, integrated solution. The feature has the potential to significantly improve the experience for visually impaired users and anyone who prefers or requires audio-based content consumption. However, the experiment also reflects Reddit's broader strategic push into video. The company recently introduced video comments, which it says have been a notable success. This AI voice feature is another step toward modernizing the platform and competing for user attention in a video-dominated social media landscape.
Potential Challenges and User Reaction
The move is not without risks. The quality and authenticity of AI voices are often debated, with many users expressing a strong dislike for robotic or unnatural narration. There is a risk that the AI could mispronounce usernames or community-specific slang, potentially disrupting the feeling of authenticity that is core to Reddit's appeal. The company acknowledges these challenges, stating that the experiment is designed to see if these new formats can be delivered in a way that feels authentic to the platform. For now, the test is limited, but its expansion will depend on whether users find the audio-visual format genuinely useful.
