A Major Leap in Driving Range
The centerpiece of the new electric GLA is its vastly improved driving range. The higher-tier models, the GLA 250+ and GLA 350 4Matic, will feature a new 85 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery. This translates to a remarkable WLTP-claimed range of up
to 657 kilometres on a single charge. To put that into perspective for Indian drivers, it’s enough for a comfortable round trip between Delhi and Jaipur or a one-way journey from Mumbai to Goa without needing to stop for a charge. This significant boost effectively moves the electric GLA from a city-focused EV to a capable long-distance tourer, a crucial step for gaining wider acceptance in a country with a developing charging network.
Redefining Fast Charging
Alongside the bigger battery, Mercedes has integrated an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, a feature previously seen in more expensive premium EVs. This allows for incredibly fast DC charging speeds of up to 320 kW. At a compatible fast-charging station, this means drivers can add up to 270 kilometres of range in just ten minutes. This game-changing speed drastically reduces waiting times on long journeys, making the ownership experience much closer to the convenience of refuelling a petrol or diesel car. Even at more common 400-volt stations, a standard DC converter ensures efficient charging. This dual-capability is a smart move, ensuring practicality across a wider range of public charging infrastructure.
More Than Just a Battery Upgrade
The enhancements are not just under the skin. The new GLA gets a subtle but effective exterior redesign, featuring a more modern, sporty look and an optional illuminated grille that aligns it with the rest of the Mercedes-EQ family. Inside, the cabin is dominated by a wall of screens, with an optional MBUX Superscreen that combines a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, and a passenger-side display under a single pane of glass. The vehicle also gets a longer wheelbase, which translates to more legroom for rear passengers and an airier cabin, further enhanced by a standard panoramic roof. Power is also plentiful, with the top-tier GLA 350 4Matic producing 260 kW (around 349 hp) for a brisk 0-100 km/h time of 5.4 seconds.
Positioning in India's Luxury Market
While official Indian pricing and launch dates are yet to be announced, the new electric GLA is poised to shake up the luxury EV space. It will compete directly with established rivals like the BMW iX1 and Volvo's electric offerings. Previously, Mercedes-Benz had discontinued the older EQA model in India, likely to make way for this comprehensively updated successor. With its class-leading range and charging specifications, the new GLA variant will have a strong case to make. The combination of the prestigious three-pointed star, a practical SUV body style, and now, truly long-distance electric credentials, makes it a highly anticipated model for affluent Indian buyers looking to transition to electric mobility without compromise.
