The Official Mandate: AI in the Curriculum
The most significant update is the government's move to formally integrate AI into the education system. Starting from the 2026-27 academic year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it mandatory to weave Computational Thinking (CT)
and AI concepts into core subjects for students from Class 3 to 8. This isn't about creating a new, separate subject or turning young children into coders. Instead, the focus is on developing foundational skills like logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and problem-solving. For younger students in Classes 3-5, this will be taught through 'unplugged' activities like games and puzzles, while older students in Classes 6-8 will be introduced to basic algorithms and the fundamentals of how AI works. The policy, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to build a generation of students who understand the technology shaping their world, not just use it.
The Promise: A Personalised Tutor for Every Student
For proponents, AI's greatest strength is its ability to act as a personal tutor, adapting to each student's unique learning pace and style. AI-powered platforms can offer instant feedback on assignments, provide 24/7 help with difficult concepts, and create customised learning paths for millions of students at once. This is particularly valuable in India's vast and diverse education system, where a single teacher may manage a large classroom with students at different learning levels. Teachers are also using AI to reduce their administrative burden. Tasks like creating lesson plans, generating worksheets, and grading objective tests can be automated, freeing up educators to focus more on mentoring and direct student engagement.
The Problem: Academic Integrity and Over-Dependence
The primary concern for educators and parents is the potential for academic dishonesty. Students are already using tools like ChatGPT to write entire essays and complete homework assignments, making it difficult for teachers to assess a child's true capability. Beyond outright cheating, there is a growing fear that over-reliance on AI could weaken students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing skills. Teachers report that this student over-dependence is their top concern. A recent survey highlighted that key parental worries include cognitive over-dependence on AI, student data privacy, and increased screen time.
Bridging the Divide: Equity and Teacher Training
The integration of AI also raises critical questions about equity. The 'digital divide' is a stark reality in India; while students in well-resourced urban schools may have easy access to AI tools, those in rural or underserved areas with limited internet and device access may be left behind. To address this, there's a growing consensus that banning the technology is futile. Instead, the focus is shifting towards structured training for teachers. The CBSE plans to provide professional development for educators on how to use AI responsibly and effectively in the classroom. Surveys show that teachers are largely positive about using AI as an aid but call for clear institutional policies on its use. Some teachers in government schools are already adopting AI tools using their personal phones, showing a proactive approach even where infrastructure is lacking.
