In early August 2026, Alliance University in Bengaluru inaugurated AU-QUASAR, an interdisciplinary hub that marks a major milestone for India's tech ambitions. It became the first private university in the country to install and operate a quantum computer
directly on its campus. The state-of-the-art facility, located in Electronics City, is not just for show; it is a hands-on learning and research environment. Its centerpiece is an 8-qubit quantum computing system, designed and built in India by the Bengaluru-based startup QpiAI. This move is a departure from the common reliance on cloud-based quantum simulators, allowing students, researchers, and industry partners to work directly with physical quantum hardware. The initiative aims to create a new benchmark for quantum education, preparing a new generation of innovators for the complexities of a technology that promises to redefine computing.
What is Quantum Work?
So, what exactly is 'quantum work'? Unlike classical computers that store information in bits as either 0s or 1s, quantum computers use qubits. These can exist in multiple states simultaneously—a phenomenon known as superposition. This allows them to process vast amounts of information at speeds far beyond the reach of even the most powerful supercomputers today. The 'work' involves developing new algorithms for these machines, exploring their applications in fields like drug discovery and materials science, creating unbreakable cybersecurity, and building better financial models. The AU-QUASAR facility, along with others being established under India's National Quantum Mission, provides the critical infrastructure needed to experiment with these concepts. By offering direct access, it allows users to test quantum algorithms, validate hardware components, and gain practical experience that is impossible to achieve through simulation alone.
The Triple Helix: Academia, Startups, and Industry
The new facility is explicitly designed to foster a 'triple helix' of collaboration. For students, it offers specialized BTech degrees in quantum computing, AI, and robotics, providing a direct pipeline of talent. For startups, it offers an invaluable opportunity to access and test their ideas on expensive, cutting-edge hardware without bearing the prohibitive cost themselves. This lowers the barrier to entry for deep-tech innovation. For established industry players, the centre serves as a research partner and a source for a quantum-ready workforce. Abhay G Chebbi, Pro-Chancellor of Alliance University, stated that AU-QUASAR aims to bring these three groups together to shape the future of technology. This collaborative model is seen as essential for building a self-sustaining ecosystem, where academic breakthroughs can be quickly translated into commercial products and solutions, driving economic growth.
Bolstering Bengaluru's Tech Dominance
The launch of AU-QUASAR is a strategic move that reinforces Bengaluru's position as India's undisputed technology capital. The inauguration was attended by prominent figures like Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan, signalling the importance of this development to the industry. The initiative aligns with the broader goals of the National Quantum Mission (NQM), a government program with an outlay of over Rs 6,000 crore aimed at making India a global leader in quantum technologies. With institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) also hosting a Quantum Computing Thematic Hub, Bengaluru is creating a dense network of research, innovation, and commercialization. This concentration of talent and infrastructure is designed to attract further investment and solidify the city's role as the nerve centre of India's quantum push.
