What Makes EOS-05 a Game-Changer?
On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Earth Observation Satellite-05 (EOS-05) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. While India has a sophisticated network of satellites, EOS-05 is fundamentally
different. It is the country's first dedicated imaging satellite placed in a geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometres above the Earth. Most of India’s other imaging satellites are in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), meaning they circle the globe and can only view a specific location for a few minutes during each pass. EOS-05, however, orbits at a speed that matches Earth's rotation. This allows it to remain in a near-fixed position relative to the Indian subcontinent, transforming it into a persistent, watchful eye. This capability moves India from periodic snapshots of its territory to near-continuous video-like monitoring of a vast geographical area.
A Constant Watch for Safety and Security
The applications of this new capability are vast and vital for the nation. For disaster management agencies, EOS-05 is a revolutionary tool. It can provide near-real-time imagery of natural disasters as they unfold, such as cyclones, floods, and forest fires, allowing for quicker and more effective response efforts. The satellite is also equipped to monitor agriculture, forestry, and environmental changes, providing crucial data for policymakers. Beyond its civilian uses, EOS-05 has significant strategic importance. Its ability to continuously observe India’s land borders and vast maritime territory provides a powerful asset for national security and defence agencies, including the Indian Navy. While ISRO officials have noted it is not a 'spy satellite', its persistent monitoring capabilities significantly enhance India’s strategic awareness and surveillance framework.
A Story of Resilience and Redemption
The success of EOS-05 is a story of perseverance for ISRO. This satellite is a replacement for EOS-03 (also known as GISAT-1), which was lost during a launch failure in August 2021 when the GSLV rocket's cryogenic upper stage malfunctioned. That setback, coupled with other launch anomalies in 2025 and early 2026, created a challenging period for the space agency. The September 4 launch was ISRO’s first successful mission of 2026, ending a seven-month hiatus and demonstrating the agency's ability to diagnose and overcome complex technical hurdles. The mission was carried out by the GSLV-F17 rocket, which successfully lifted the 2,367 kg satellite—its heaviest payload to date—proving the reliability of a launch vehicle that was once considered temperamental.
Current Status: Settling into its New Home
Following its successful launch, EOS-05 was placed into an initial sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. Over the next few days, ISRO engineers meticulously performed a series of three orbit-raising manoeuvres, using the satellite’s onboard propulsion system to gradually push it higher. On September 7, ISRO confirmed that the final manoeuvre was completed successfully, and EOS-05 has now settled into its designated geosynchronous orbit. The space agency has reported that the satellite's health is normal. With the satellite now in its final orbital slot, engineers will conduct a series of health checks and system calibrations. Once these are complete, the advanced imaging payloads will be activated, and EOS-05 will begin sending back its first images, ready to commence its decade-long mission.
