A New Way to Measure Attraction
Forget traditional metrics like visitor numbers or economic output for a moment. The Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index 2026 offers a fresh perspective by analysing what people are actually saying online. Developed by Yanolja Research in partnership
with Purdue University and Seoul's Kyung Hee University, this report dives deep into social media data across 14 languages. It measures both the volume of conversation about a city ('awareness') and the emotion behind it ('attractiveness'). The final score is a blend of four key areas: scenery, cultural experiences, general experiences, and hospitality, providing a unique snapshot of how visitors truly feel about a destination.
New York City: The Concrete Jungle At The Top
Claiming the number one spot, New York City proves its global magnetism is as strong as ever. The Big Apple triumphed thanks to a powerful combination of immense global visibility and overwhelmingly positive visitor sentiment. From its iconic landmarks like Times Square and Central Park to its world-renowned museums and vibrant Broadway shows, New York consistently generates a buzz that few cities can match. The index shows that beyond just being famous, the city delivers experiences that leave visitors deeply impressed, solidifying its position not just as a place people know, but a place people love to visit.
Paris: Enduring Charm and Global Appeal
Securing the second position, Paris continues to hold a special place in the hearts of global travellers. The French capital’s ranking highlights its dual strength: it is one of the most talked-about cities in the world and maintains a powerful positive perception among visitors. While its fame is undeniable, the study reveals that its true attractiveness in terms of positive sentiment is slightly lower, placing fifth in that specific metric. This suggests that while Paris is a universally recognized dream destination, the on-ground experience, though highly rated, faces immense expectations. Its combination of historic beauty, rich culture, and romantic allure ensures it remains a formidable leader in global tourism.
The Impressive Rise of Osaka
The biggest story in the top tier may be Osaka, which landed firmly in third place. This reflects a broader trend of Asian cities gaining significant ground in global tourism appeal. Osaka’s success is driven by its unique blend of modern urban energy, historical attractions, and, most notably, its legendary culinary scene. The city serves as a gateway to western Japan and has been steadily growing its international profile through improved connectivity and major global events. Osaka's high ranking underscores a shift in traveler preferences towards destinations that offer deep cultural immersion and unique local experiences.
Fame vs. Feeling: The Key Difference
A fascinating insight from the index is the distinction it draws between 'awareness' and 'attractiveness'. Awareness measures how famous a city is, while attractiveness evaluates how positively tourists feel about it. For example, while New York excels in both, the report notes that other cities show a gap. Japan, in particular, demonstrates a remarkable ability to convert curiosity into devotion. Kyoto ranked second purely on attractiveness, even though it was fourth overall. With a total of eight cities in the top 50, including Okinawa at number nine overall, Japan proves it excels at creating positive and memorable visitor experiences that go beyond just name recognition.
