Beyond the Postcard
Switzerland is a country viewed through train windows and from mountain summits. We are accustomed to seeing the Alps from the ground up, a perspective defined by the trail ahead or the track below. Paragliding shatters this viewpoint entirely. It's not
just about seeing the landscape from a higher altitude; it’s about experiencing it with a sense of freedom that ground-based travel cannot replicate. When you glide silently through the air, the scale of the landscape becomes profoundly real. The Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau are no longer just static peaks in a panorama but colossal, three-dimensional giants you can circle. The toy-like villages and shimmering lakes below offer a sense of perspective and tranquility that is both exhilarating and deeply peaceful.
The Heart of the Action: Where to Fly
Interlaken is the undisputed capital of adventure sports in Switzerland, and for good reason. Nestled between the turquoise waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, flights here offer an unparalleled view of both lakes simultaneously, before landing gently in the town's central park, the Höhematte. For a more dramatic and raw alpine experience, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is a top contender. Launching from the car-free village of Mürren, you soar past sheer cliffs and some of the valley's 72 waterfalls. Another iconic option is Zermatt, where you can fly with the majestic Matterhorn as your silent companion. Each location provides a different flavour of the alpine experience, from the accessible beauty of Interlaken to the high-alpine grandeur of Zermatt.
Your First Flight: A surprisingly Gentle Adventure
If the idea of running off a mountain sounds intimidating, the reality of a tandem paragliding flight is reassuringly calm. No prior experience is necessary. The entire process is managed by licensed, professional pilots who prioritize safety. The adventure typically begins with a van ride up to the launch point, such as Beatenberg near Interlaken. After a clear safety briefing, you are strapped securely into a comfortable harness in front of your pilot. Takeoff involves just a few running steps down a gentle, grassy slope until the wing catches the air and lifts you gracefully off the ground. Unlike skydiving, there is no freefall; it’s a smooth, gentle ascent into a quiet glide. The flight itself, lasting anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes for a standard trip, is often described as surprisingly serene rather than just a thrill ride.
Practical Planning for Your Alpine Flight
Paragliding in Switzerland is possible year-round, with each season offering a unique appeal. Winter flights soar over a snow-covered wonderland, while autumn provides clear air and colourful foliage. The cost for a standard tandem flight generally ranges from 160 to 250 Swiss Francs (CHF), depending on the location and duration. Interlaken flights often start around 180 CHF. Most operators offer a photo and video package for an additional fee, typically around 40 CHF, which is highly recommended to capture the incredible views. As for what to wear, sturdy shoes are a must, and it's wise to bring layers, as it can be cooler in the air even on a warm day. Booking in advance, especially during peak summer months, is a good idea to secure your spot.
