What is Current Booking?
Current Booking is a facility provided by Indian Railways that allows passengers to book available seats after the preparation of the first reservation chart. Any seats that remain vacant due to last-minute cancellations or because they were not booked
under any quota are made available for booking. This serves a dual purpose: it gives travellers a chance to secure a confirmed seat at the last minute and helps the railways fill seats that would otherwise go empty. The key difference from regular booking is that under Current Booking, you can only get a confirmed ticket; RAC or Wait-listed tickets are not issued through this facility.
The Two-Chart System Explained
Indian Railways operates on a two-chart system to finalize passenger lists. The first reservation chart is typically prepared several hours before the train's departure. For trains leaving between 5 AM and 2 PM, this chart is often prepared the previous night by 9 PM. For other trains, it can be prepared between 8 to 10 hours in advance. After this first chart is made, the Current Booking window opens. A second and final chart is then prepared about 30 minutes before the train's departure. This final chart accounts for any bookings or cancellations that occurred after the first chart was prepared, including those made through the Current Booking facility.
How to Find and Book Vacant Seats Online
Finding these last-minute seats is a straightforward digital process. You can check for availability and book tickets online through the IRCTC website or its official mobile app. On the IRCTC platform, there is an option labelled 'Charts / Vacancy'. By entering the train number, journey date, and boarding station, you can view a graphical layout of the coaches and see exactly which berths are vacant. Available seats are clearly marked, often as 'CURR_AVBL' (Current Available). The booking process is the same as for a regular ticket; you select the seat, enter passenger details, and make the payment to receive a confirmed e-ticket.
Key Rules and Considerations
While Current Booking is a powerful tool for travellers, there are some rules to keep in mind. Firstly, this facility is available for e-tickets only, for both regular users and agents. Secondly, once a ticket is booked through Current Booking, you cannot change the boarding point, passenger name, age, or gender. The fare for tickets booked under this facility is the same as the general fare, with no extra charges. However, some reports suggest a discount may be offered on the base fare for some unbooked berths. The booking window remains open from the time the first chart is prepared until 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure.
Benefits for the Last-Minute Traveller
The most significant advantage of this system is the ability to secure a confirmed seat for immediate travel plans, eliminating the uncertainty of a wait-listed ticket. Passengers who previously might have given up on a journey after seeing a long waiting list now have a second chance to get a confirmed berth if cancellations free up space. This digital and transparent process removes the need to negotiate with the TTE on board, providing peace of mind. It formalises the process of last-minute seat allocation, making it more organised and accessible for everyone. By simply checking the 'Chart Vacancy' feature before heading to the station, you might just find a confirmed seat on a train you thought was fully booked.
