What Is the New Feature?
Reddit has begun a limited experiment that adds a new "Play" mode to select text-based posts. When users tap this option, the post and its top comments are transformed into a vertical, TikTok-style video. AI-generated voices read the content aloud while
the corresponding words are highlighted on-screen in a karaoke-like fashion. To ensure transparency, these clips are marked with a disclaimer: "Real conversation voiced by AI." The original text thread remains completely untouched and accessible via the standard "Read" view, allowing users to choose how they want to consume the content.
How It Works and Who Can Use It
The test started rolling out on the web on August 17, with access on iOS and Android devices following shortly after. For now, the feature is a limited experiment, available only for a manually selected group of English-language posts in certain communities. Reddit has used this approach to test the waters and gather feedback, with one public example being the transformation of an eight-year-old thread about board games into a roughly three-minute narrated video. This demonstrates the feature's potential to breathe new life into archival content, not just new posts. The platform uses different-sounding AI voices for the original poster and the replies to create a more dynamic listening experience.
Reclaiming a Viral Content Format
This move is a direct response to a massively popular content trend that was already happening outside of Reddit. For years, creators on platforms like TikTok and YouTube have scraped interesting Reddit threads, used AI voices to narrate them, and paired the audio with unrelated video gameplay footage. These "Reddit story" channels often attract tens of millions of views, generating revenue and engagement that Reddit itself was missing out on. CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this during a recent earnings call, noting the emergence of "podcasts where people read Reddit content." By creating its own native version, Reddit aims to reclaim that audience and keep that engagement within its own ecosystem.
More Than Just a Trend
Beyond competing with other platforms, the new feature serves two other key business goals: accessibility and increased user engagement. A Reddit spokesperson highlighted that the feature could make content accessible to users in moments when reading isn't practical, such as during a commute, while exercising, or doing chores. This transforms Reddit from a purely read-only experience into something that can be consumed passively, like a podcast. It also opens up the platform to users with visual impairments. This push into video and audio follows other recent moves, like the introduction of video comments, which the company says have been a success.
An Authentic Experience?
While the strategic thinking is clear, the execution will be critical. One of the challenges is ensuring the AI voices feel authentic to the platform's culture and can correctly pronounce slang, usernames, and community-specific jargon. The current AI voices can sometimes have an odd cadence or misplaced emphasis, which could be jarring for users accustomed to genuine human interaction. Reddit has stated its goal is to understand how these formats can be delivered in a way that feels authentic. As the company gathers feedback from this initial test, the key will be balancing the desire for new, engaging formats with the unique, text-driven community culture that has defined Reddit for over two decades.
