What is the New Token System?
Indian Railways is introducing a new token-based system for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Instead of standing for hours in a long, unmanaged queue, passengers will now be given a token with
a sequence number. This number determines their turn at the counter, aiming to make the entire process more organised and reduce the chaotic crowding that has become synonymous with Tatkal bookings. This change is exclusively for offline, counter-based bookings and does not affect how Tatkal tickets are booked online through the IRCTC website or mobile app.
How It Works: A Step-by-Step Guide
The process is designed to be straightforward and eliminate the need for multiple visits or extended waiting times. Passengers need to visit the railway reservation counter during a specific token distribution window before the actual Tatkal booking begins. There are separate time slots for AC and non-AC classes. For AC Tatkal tickets, tokens are issued between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC classes like Sleeper, the tokens are distributed from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Once you have your token, you can wait for your number to be called or announced. When your turn comes, you proceed to the counter to complete the booking. This synchronised approach means you collect the token and book the ticket in a single, more organised visit.
Understanding Your Token and Timings
The token you receive is your placeholder in a digital queue. While the token distribution happens in the morning, the actual Tatkal booking windows remain unchanged. The booking for AC classes still commences at 10:00 AM, and for non-AC classes, it begins at 11:00 AM, one day before the journey. The new system simply organises the queue in the hours leading up to the booking start time. Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens, for instance, 10 for AC class and 15 for non-AC class, though this can be adjusted based on demand at different stations. If seats remain after all token-holders have booked, they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis to those without tokens.
A Fairer System with Priority for Families
A key feature of this new system is the introduction of priority categories to ensure a fairer process. Category A tokens are for passengers booking tickets for themselves or their family members, and these will be given precedence. To get a Category A token, you must present your own valid photo ID and that of the family member you are booking for. Category B is for all other types of bookings. It's also crucial to remember that these tokens are strictly non-transferable; the ticket will only be issued to the person whose name is on the token. This measure is a direct attempt to curb the influence of touts who often exploit the old system.
What You Need to Bring
While the system is new, the documentation requirements remain the same. When you go to the counter to book your Tatkal ticket, you must carry a valid, government-issued photo identity proof. Accepted forms of ID include an Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence, or PAN Card. It is advisable to have the details of all passengers, such as names and ages, filled out on the reservation form beforehand to make the process smoother once your token number is called. Being prepared ensures you can complete your transaction quickly and efficiently within your allotted turn.
