Long before ChatGPT became a household name, Google was deep into the world of conversational AI. Their marquee project was LaMDA, which stands for Language Model for Dialogue Applications. First announced at Google's I/O conference in 2021, LaMDA was a remarkably
sophisticated system. It wasn't just built to answer questions; it was designed for natural, free-flowing conversation, capable of staying on topic and improvising with a creativity that felt startlingly human. This was a significant leap beyond the rigid, clunky chatbots people were used to. In fact, its predecessor, a model called Meena, was developed as early as 2020. Google had the technology and the talent, and LaMDA was proof that they were at the forefront of the generative AI revolution before it even had a name.
A Principled, Cautious Approach
So, if Google had this powerful tool, why didn't they release it to the world? The company's public stance was rooted in a framework of 'Responsible AI'. Since 2018, following internal pushback on military projects, Google has operated under a set of AI principles that prioritize safety, accountability, and social benefit. Releasing a large language model like LaMDA was seen as a major risk. Leaders were concerned about its potential for generating misinformation, perpetuating biases learned from its training data, and its general 'toxicity'. The company felt it had a higher bar for product quality and safety than a startup might. The Sentience Controversy
Google's concerns about how LaMDA would be perceived were thrown into the spotlight in June 2022. A Google engineer named Blake Lemoine went public with the extraordinary claim that he believed LaMDA had become sentient. Lemoine, who was tasked with testing the AI for safety, published transcripts of conversations where the chatbot discussed its feelings, fears, and its desire for rights. The story went viral, sparking a global debate about the nature of consciousness. Google quickly dismissed the claims, stating that LaMDA was simply a very advanced mimic, and that Lemoine was anthropomorphizing the system. While the scientific community largely sided with Google, the incident perfectly illustrated the company's dilemma. The technology was so convincing that even one of its own engineers believed it was alive, highlighting the very ethical and social complexities that made Google hesitant to release it.
The ChatGPT Disruption
While Google was carefully testing LaMDA in a controlled environment, a San Francisco-based company called OpenAI was pursuing a different strategy. In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public with few restrictions. The impact was immediate and explosive, becoming the fastest-growing consumer application in history. In a rush to respond, Google announced its own conversational AI, Bard (powered by LaMDA, and later rebranded to Gemini), in early 2023. The launch felt hurried and put the company on the back foot, playing catch-up to a rival that had captured the public's imagination.
