An Enduring Classic Reimagined
For years, the Deo Tibba Base Camp trek has been a beloved choice for adventurers looking for a moderate challenge with rewarding Himalayan vistas. Starting near the ancient village of Jagatsukh, just a short drive from Manali, this trek has always been celebrated
for its diverse landscapes, from dense pine and birch forests to sprawling alpine meadows. It serves as the gateway to the base of the majestic Deo Tibba peak, which stands tall at 6,001 metres. While the trek was already a complete package, the growing recognition of a pristine high-altitude lake along its path has added a new layer of magic to the journey, transforming a great trek into an unforgettable one.
The Jewel of the Trail: Chota Chandratal
Known as Mini Chandratal or, more commonly, Chota Chandratal, this stunning glacial lake has become a primary highlight of the expedition. Nestled in a rocky basin at an altitude of around 4,480 metres (approximately 14,700 feet), the lake is the grand prize for trekkers before they make their way back down. Its name, which translates to "Small Moon Lake," is a nod to the larger and more famous Chandratal in Lahaul and Spiti. Like its namesake, Chota Chandratal boasts emerald and turquoise waters that perfectly mirror the sky and the surrounding snow-dusted peaks, creating a scene of serene beauty.
The Journey to a Hidden Lake
The trek to Chota Chandratal is a dramatic and rewarding experience in itself. The typical six-day itinerary leads trekkers from the starting point near Khanol through lush forests to the first campsite at Chikka. From there, the trail ascends to Seri, a vast and captivating meadow that was once a glacial lake bed. This flat, open expanse is carpeted with alpine flowers and crisscrossed by streams, offering a moment of tranquility before the final push. The next stop is Tainta, the campsite from which the excursion to the lake is made. The final leg of the journey to Chota Chandratal involves navigating moraine-rich terrain—a challenging but exhilarating walk over rocky debris left behind by glaciers. Throughout this section, the magnificent Deo Tibba peak and its hanging glaciers remain in constant view, motivating trekkers onward.
What Makes It a Must-Do?
The addition of Chota Chandratal turns the Deo Tibba trek into more than just a journey to a base camp; it becomes a destination-focused adventure. The lake provides a clear and breathtaking objective. The contrast between the lush green valleys of Chikka and Seri and the stark, rocky beauty of the high-altitude terrain near the lake makes for a truly comprehensive Himalayan experience. It combines the thrill of a moderate high-altitude trek with the reward of witnessing a pristine, emerald-blue lake that few have seen. It offers the perfect blend of physical challenge and visual splendour, encapsulating the very essence of trekking in Himachal Pradesh.
Planning Your Expedition
The Deo Tibba Base Camp trek is rated as moderate in difficulty. While it doesn't require technical climbing skills, it does demand a good level of physical fitness to handle the daily ascents and high altitude. The entire trek usually takes about six days, including acclimatization. The best time to undertake this journey is between May and June or from September to mid-October, when the weather is generally favourable and the landscapes are at their most vibrant. Trekkers should be prepared for cold temperatures, especially at the higher camps like Tainta, and for the challenging moraine fields leading to the lake.
