A Modern Problem of Digital Waste
Every year, the world generates a staggering amount of electronic waste, or e-waste. In 2022 alone, this amounted to 62 million tonnes of discarded phones, laptops, televisions, and other gadgets. This figure is projected to climb to 74 million tonnes by
2030 if current trends continue. Hidden within this mountain of waste is a fortune in precious metals. It's estimated that about 7% of all the world's gold is currently locked away inside these electronics, largely because traditional recycling methods are inefficient or environmentally harmful. Less than 20% of e-waste is properly recycled, meaning valuable and finite resources are lost to landfills, while potentially toxic materials leach into the environment.
Alchemy for the 21st Century
The Royal Mint has partnered with a Canadian clean technology firm, Excir, to tackle this problem head-on. At its new, state-of-the-art facility in Llantrisant, the Mint is deploying a world-first process to sustainably recover this precious metal. Instead of using high-temperature smelting or harsh, corrosive acids, this new method relies on a patented chemical formula that works at room temperature. Circuit boards are shredded and then immersed in the solution, which selectively dissolves the gold in a matter of seconds, allowing it to be recovered as a fine powder. The process is remarkably efficient, capable of recovering over 99% of the gold from the electronic components.
A Golden Opportunity
The new plant is capable of processing up to 90 tonnes of UK-sourced circuit boards every week, or 4,000 tonnes annually. This is expected to yield hundreds of kilograms of gold per year, creating a significant new and sustainable revenue stream for the government-owned entity. By bringing this process in-house, The Royal Mint not only secures a supply of high-purity gold but also keeps the recycling process within the UK, creating around 40 specialised jobs for chemists and engineers. The recovered gold, which is of 999.9 purity, is already being used to create a luxury jewellery line named '886 by The Royal Mint', a nod to the institution's founding date. There are also plans to use the gold for commemorative coins in the future.
Beyond the Bottom Line
The implications of this initiative extend far beyond financial returns. By embracing what is often called 'urban mining', The Royal Mint is providing a powerful example of the circular economy in action. The energy required to extract gold from e-waste is considerably lower than that needed for traditional mining, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. This method also avoids the environmental devastation associated with conventional mining, such as deforestation, water pollution, and habitat destruction. Furthermore, the process doesn't just isolate gold. Other valuable materials like copper, tin, and steel are also sorted and sent to specialist recyclers, with the goal of eventually recycling 100% of the circuit board components.
