A One-Stop Shop for the Wild
Gone are the days of juggling multiple websites for train tickets, hotel rooms, and elusive safari permits. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Forest Department
to offer all-in-one wildlife tourism packages. This collaboration, announced around International Tiger Day on July 29, 2026, aims to streamline the entire booking process, making the state's rich biodiversity more accessible to everyone from families to seasoned wildlife photographers. The new initiative, dubbed 'VANDARSHAN', bundles confirmed train travel, local transfers, accommodation, and, most importantly, assured safari permits into a single transaction.
Which Parks Are on the Itinerary?
Initially, the partnership covers six of Maharashtra's most prominent wildlife destinations, primarily concentrated in the Vidarbha region, which is well-connected by rail. These include four major Tiger Reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Bor, and Navegaon-Nagzira. In addition to these tiger havens, the packages also provide access to two important wildlife sanctuaries: Umred Karhandla and Tipeshwar. This selection offers a fantastic cross-section of the state's fauna and flora. While it doesn't yet include all of Maharashtra's tiger reserves, like Melghat and Sahyadri, it covers the most sought-after safari circuits in the state.
What's Included in a Package?
The core promise of these integrated packages is convenience and certainty. A single booking secures your confirmed train tickets, typically on a service like the Vidarbha Express from Mumbai, along with lodging near your chosen park. It also covers local road transfers from the railway station to your hotel and to the safari gates. The most significant value, however, lies in the guaranteed safari permit. Securing permits, especially for popular core zones in parks like Tadoba, can be a frantic affair, with slots selling out minutes after they open online 120 days in advance. This new system leverages an institutional quota allocated to IRCTC, removing that major hurdle for tourists. The packages are being rolled out as curated itineraries, often structured as four-night, five-day trips.
How to Book Your Wildlife Adventure
Booking these new wildlife packages is designed to be as straightforward as booking a train ticket. The integrated tours will be available directly through the official IRCTC Tourism website (irctctourism.com) and likely its mobile app. While specific package details and pricing are still being rolled out, travellers can expect to find them listed under the 'Tour Packages' or 'Holidays' section, similar to how IRCTC lists its other special tourist trains and pilgrimage tours. The process will involve selecting your desired wildlife destination and travel dates, after which the platform will present a consolidated package that includes all the bundled services, offering a seamless 'one-click' style booking experience that eliminates the previous complexities.
A Boost for Tourism and Conservation
This initiative is expected to do more than just simplify travel logistics. Officials believe that by making wildlife destinations more accessible and easier to book, it will significantly boost domestic tourism to Maharashtra's protected forests. This increased footfall is anticipated to generate more livelihood opportunities for local communities that depend on tourism. Furthermore, the partnership is framed around the promotion of responsible and sustainable tourism. By formalizing the travel process through a major national entity like IRCTC, the initiative aims to bring more organized and eco-conscious tourism to these sensitive ecosystems, strengthening awareness about wildlife conservation in the long run.
