What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast train designed for long-distance journeys, primarily serving passengers in non-air-conditioned sleeper and general unreserved classes. Billed as a service for the common person, it aims to provide
an upgraded travel experience at an affordable price point. These trains connect cities that are often more than 800 kilometres apart, targeting routes with high passenger demand. In August 2026, Indian Railways approved a significant expansion with seven new services set to enhance connectivity across the country.
The Technology Behind the Speed
A key innovation of the Amrit Bharat Express is its 'push-pull' technology. Each train is powered by two locomotives, one at the front and one at the rear. This configuration allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, which helps in reducing overall journey times, a significant benefit on long-distance routes. The trains are designed to operate at a maximum speed of 130 kmph. This technological upgrade, combined with semi-permanent couplers, ensures a smoother, jerk-free ride for passengers.
Upgraded Comfort and Amenities
Inside, the Amrit Bharat Express features a host of improvements over conventional trains. The 22-coach trains are composed of 12 sleeper class coaches, 8 general second-class coaches, and two guard compartments. Passengers can expect more comfortable cushioned berths, mobile charging points for every seat, improved lighting, and better ventilation. The train also features modern bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, CCTV cameras for enhanced security, and a passenger information system. A standout feature is the fully sealed gangway, which allows for smoother movement between coaches and reduces noise.
New Routes Connecting India
The Railway Board recently approved seven new routes, significantly expanding the Amrit Bharat network. These new services are set to connect key cities and towns across northern, central, western, and southern India. Some of the notable new weekly services include the Dhanbad-Coimbatore Express, linking Jharkhand with Tamil Nadu, and the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur Express, connecting Telangana with Uttar Pradesh. Other routes will link Prayagraj with Mumbai and Udhna (Surat), and Gorakhpur with both Delhi and Mumbai's Bandra Terminus, strengthening crucial travel corridors for work and leisure.
Fare Structure: Premium Economy on Rails
The fare for the Amrit Bharat Express is positioned to be accessible. Ticket prices are about 15-17% higher than those for standard mail or express trains, a marginal increase for the enhanced speed and comfort provided. For instance, the minimum fare for a second-class journey starts at around ₹35. For trains introduced from January 2026 onwards, known as Amrit Bharat II, the fare structure has been slightly modified, with a minimum chargeable distance of 200 km for sleeper class. Importantly, these trains do not have dynamic pricing, ensuring fares remain stable for passengers.
