A Major Tech Upgrade
Dubai International Airport is in the process of rolling out a new generation of advanced security scanners across its terminals. This initiative involves replacing older X-ray machines with modern Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, similar to those used
in the medical field. The goal, according to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, is to make the security process “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient” for the millions of passengers who pass through the hub. The rollout is a gradual, ongoing programme of continuous upgrades, with the aim of eventually replacing all the older technology.
Laptops and Electronics Can Stay in Your Bag
For many travellers, the most welcome change will be the end of having to unpack large electronics. The new CT scanners create detailed 3D images of the contents of your hand luggage, allowing security staff to get a clear view of devices without them being removed. This means that at security lanes equipped with the new technology, you will no longer be required to place laptops, tablets, and other large electronic items in a separate tray for screening. This change alone is expected to significantly speed up processing times and reduce a major point of hassle for passengers.
What About the 100ml Liquid Rule?
This is where passengers need to be cautious. While the new scanners are technically capable of analysing liquids inside your bag, this does not mean the 100ml rule has been abolished. For now, Dubai Airports' official guidance still requires liquids to be in containers no larger than 100ml, with a total volume not exceeding one litre. However, the key difference is that at the new scanning stations, you will not have to take this clear bag of liquids out for separate screening. The ultimate aim is to remove the need for these restrictions, but travellers should not assume this is already in effect. Always follow the specific instructions given by security staff at the checkpoint.
How the New Technology Works
Traditional airport scanners use 2D X-ray technology, which provides a flat image of your bag’s contents. This often makes it difficult to distinguish between different items, which is why dense objects like laptops have to be scanned separately. The new AI-powered CT scanners provide a much more detailed inspection by generating high-resolution 3D images. This allows security systems and personnel to digitally inspect the contents of a bag from every angle, as if they were rotating the items on a screen. This advanced capability makes it much easier to detect potential threats without the need to physically unpack the bag.
A Gradual Rollout Across Terminals
The new scanners are already being installed and are operational in some parts of Dubai International Airport, including in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. However, the upgrade is happening progressively across all terminals, with a target for completion by the end of 2026. This means that for the time being, passengers may encounter either the old or the new system depending on which security lane they are directed to. The key takeaway is to be prepared for the old process but be pleasantly surprised if you encounter the new one. Until the rollout is complete, you should always follow the directions of the security personnel on duty.
