In a unique experiment, they set up parabolic speakers, playing a V8 recording on one side and a live drummer on the other. Test listeners walking between the two sound sources noted striking similarities in energy, cadence, and emotional impact. They also realised that a real engine isn't perfectly uniform; it has tiny imperfections and variations, much like a human drummer, which gives it a natural, engaging quality that a perfect digital replica would lack.
What Is The Torcal?
The Torcal itself is Bentley’s first foray into the all-electric market, an SUV set to be officially unveiled in September 2026. The name is a nod to two things: the striking El Torcal de Antequera, a limestone rock landscape in Andalusia, Spain, and the Latin verb 'torquere', meaning 'to twist', the origin of the word 'torque'. This dual meaning perfectly captures a vehicle designed to blend natural inspiration with immense electric power. While the soundscape is a major innovation, the vehicle represents a pivotal moment for the luxury automaker as it navigates the transition away from its famous V8 and W12 engines.
A New Definition of Soul
By treating the sound of its heritage engines as a source of inspiration rather than a file to be copied, Bentley is offering a new philosophy for the electric era.
