An Off-Roader That Swims
For decades, a key metric for any serious off-roader has been its 'wading depth' — the maximum water level it can drive through without catastrophic damage. Mercedes-Benz, however, appears to be thinking beyond simply wading. A recently published patent
application reveals the automaker's engineers are working on a system for a vehicle to perform a full 'swimming operation'. The patent, filed in Germany, describes a control system for entering a body of water, staying afloat, navigating, and exiting on the other side, all without external help. This goes far beyond typical off-road capabilities, envisioning a vehicle that doesn't have to stop when the road disappears beneath a lake or river.
Buoyancy on Demand
The core of the invention isn't a boat-like hull, but a clever, adaptable system for generating buoyancy. The patent describes removable flotation devices, either foam inserts or inflatable modules, that are fitted into the vehicle's wheel arches. These aren't permanent fixtures. The concept includes stowing the deflated modules in a space like the spare wheel compartment, to be inflated by an onboard compressor when needed. A central control unit would manage the buoyancy, able to inflate or deflate the modules at each corner independently. This would allow the system to keep the vehicle level and stable, automatically compensating for an uneven load or the force of a water current.
Propulsion Without a Propeller
Once floating, how does it move? Instead of adding a propeller or jets, Mercedes' solution uses the hardware already there: the wheels and suspension. The patent details how the vehicle's wheels would act as paddles for propulsion and rudders for steering. The system would leverage an adaptive suspension to raise or lower the wheels in the water to find the optimal depth for thrust and control. This is particularly well-suited for an electric vehicle with individual wheel motors, like the electric G 580. The control unit could vary torque and speed at each wheel, even spinning some forwards and others backwards, to precisely steer the vehicle or hold its position against a current.
The Brains of the Operation
This amphibious feat is less about brute force and more about intelligent software. A central control unit is the star of the patent, orchestrating every phase of the water crossing. It manages the deployment of the buoyancy aids, adjusts for stability, and controls wheel-based propulsion. The system is also designed to handle the tricky transition from water back to land. As a wheel makes contact with the shore, the controller would carefully manage torque and traction to ensure a smooth, controlled exit without digging into the bank or losing grip. The patent even describes an 'anchor' mode, where GPS and sensors are used to hold a position in the water by subtly spinning the wheels against the current.
Patent vs. Production: A Reality Check
While the patent documents don't name a specific vehicle, the capabilities described seem tailor-made for a future version of the G-Class, especially the technologically advanced electric model. However, it's crucial to remember the difference between a patent and a production plan. Automakers patent thousands of ideas to protect their intellectual property, and many never see the light of day. For now, there is no official announcement that Mercedes-Benz will build a swimming SUV. The filing simply shows that the brand's engineers are exploring the absolute limits of off-road capability and solving the complex problems involved. It’s a blueprint for the future, not a brochure for a new model.
