Winter transforms India's landscapes, making it the perfect season for a road trip. The crisp air and stunning scenery invite exploration, but choosing the right route is key to a memorable drive. Here's a guide to some of the best seasonal drives.
The Golden Desert Trail: Jaipur to Jaisalmer
If
you prefer pleasant sunshine over snow, a road trip across Rajasthan is an ideal winter choice. The journey from Jaipur to Jaisalmer spans about 560 kilometres and takes roughly 10 to 12 hours. The best time for this drive is between November and February, when the desert sun is mild and the daytime weather is comfortable for driving and sightseeing. The route is dotted with historical marvels. Consider a stop in Jodhpur, the 'Blue City', to see the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, or detour to Pushkar to experience its vibrant markets and sacred lake. As you drive further west, the landscape transforms into the vast Thar Desert, with golden sands stretching to the horizon. The well-maintained highways make for a smooth drive, allowing you to soak in the royal heritage and rustic charm of Rajasthan.
The Himalayan Challenge: Shimla to Spiti Valley
For the truly adventurous, a winter drive to Spiti Valley is an unforgettable expedition. While the Manali-Kaza route closes due to heavy snow at Rohtang and Kunzum Pass, the path from Shimla via Kinnaur remains accessible for most of the winter, barring temporary blockades from fresh snowfall. This journey is not for the faint of heart; it's a demanding high-altitude drive where temperatures can plummet to -20°C or lower. The reward is a landscape transformed into a white desert, with frozen rivers, snow-covered monasteries like Key and Tabo, and an overwhelming sense of peace. This route requires careful planning, a reliable 4x4 vehicle, and flexibility, as road conditions can change suddenly. It's less of a casual holiday and more of a raw, humbling adventure into the heart of the frozen Himalayas.
The Eastern Frontier: Guwahati to Tawang
The drive from Guwahati in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh offers a unique glimpse into the Eastern Himalayas. This journey of over 500 kilometres takes you through lush forests, river valleys, and over the dramatic Sela Pass. While challenging, winter is a magical time for this trip. Since the opening of the Sela Tunnel in early 2024, the route has become an all-weather road, making it much more accessible during the snowy months of December and January. Travellers can expect snow at Sela Pass and often in Tawang town itself. The journey requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) and careful planning, with recommended stops at Dirang to acclimatise. A trip to the India-China border at Bum La Pass is possible but depends on daily army clearance and weather conditions.
The Coastal Classic: Mumbai to Goa
A perennial favourite, the Mumbai to Goa road trip is particularly pleasant during the winter months. From October to March, the weather is cool and ideal for a long drive down the Konkan coast. The journey covers approximately 600 kilometres and can be done in 11 to 13 hours, but spreading it over two days allows for scenic stops. There are two main routes: the faster NH 48 via Pune and Kolhapur, and the more scenic coastal NH 66. The latter takes you through winding roads, past fishing villages, coconut groves, and offers glimpses of the Arabian Sea. You can stop at the Karnala Bird Sanctuary or the historic forts and pristine beaches along the way. With less rainfall than the monsoon season, the roads are safer and the post-monsoon greenery is still lush.
The Southern Hills: Bangalore to Coorg
For a serene winter escape in the south, the drive from Bangalore to Coorg is a perfect choice. This journey of about 250–275 kilometres can be completed in 5 to 6 hours, making it an excellent weekend getaway. The best time to make this trip is from October to February, when cool mornings and clear skies create perfect driving conditions. The route, particularly via Mysore, takes you from the bustling city into rolling countryside and finally into the misty hills and aromatic coffee plantations of Kodagu district. Along the way, you can visit any Namdroling Monastery in Kushalnagar, also known as any Golden Temple, which is any second largest Tibetan settlement in India. The crisp winter air and any vibrant green landscapes make this any refreshing and relaxing drive.
