A New Global Alliance Takes Shape
The most significant recent development is India joining a US-led global initiative to shape the future of 6G. Announced in early September 2026, this partnership brings together 25 nations, including major technology players like Japan and Germany, to collaborate
on the development and deployment of next-generation networks. The agreement was finalised on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial, highlighting a coordinated effort to ensure that 6G standards reflect shared principles around security, competition, and innovation. This move firmly places India within the core group of nations that will influence how 6G technology evolves globally, marking a decisive step in its tech ambitions.
From Tech Taker to Tech Maker
This international alignment is the latest step in a carefully orchestrated national strategy. The government's "Bharat 6G Vision" document, released in 2023, outlines an ambitious goal: to transform India from a mere consumer of telecom technology into a key designer, developer, and exporter by 2030. For decades, India largely imported technology for 2G, 3G, and even 4G networks. With 5G, the country moved towards parallel adoption, but the 6G push represents a more profound shift. The stated goal is to capture 10% of all global 6G-related patents. This strategy is less about faster download speeds for consumers and more about securing a long-term economic and strategic foothold in the next era of digital infrastructure.
What is 6G, Anyway?
While still in the conceptual stage, 6G promises to be far more than just faster 5G. The vision for 6G integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning directly into the network's fabric, creating what some call an "intelligent network." This could enable futuristic applications like holographic communication, digital twins of entire cities for real-time monitoring, and networks that can sense the physical environment. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), with India's contribution, has defined key capabilities for 6G, including ubiquitous connectivity and sustainability. This means the goal is a network that is not only powerful but also energy-efficient and universally available, aiming to bridge the digital divide.
The Engine Room: Bharat 6G Alliance
Driving the domestic side of this ambition is the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA), a collaborative body of industry players, academic institutions, and government agencies. The alliance, which has been steadily growing its membership, is tasked with translating the vision into action. It has formed working groups focused on critical areas like spectrum policy, device ecosystems, and sustainable technology. The B6GA is central to fostering indigenous research, supporting startups, and ensuring Indian contributions are embedded in global standards bodies like the 3GPP and ITU. The government is backing these efforts by funding 6G testbeds and over 100 research proposals to build a robust domestic R&D ecosystem.
The Long Road to 2030
Despite the clear momentum, the path to 6G leadership is not without significant hurdles. The most immediate challenge is the ongoing monetisation of 5G networks, a necessary step to fund the massive investment required for future R&D. India also faces stiff competition from other nations pouring resources into 6G research. Moreover, transforming research and patents into commercially successful, globally adopted products is a major challenge that requires moving from lab-based success to international market penetration. The government's vision is a two-phase plan, with exploration and proof-of-concept tests running until 2025, followed by a development and commercialisation phase leading up to 2030, supported by a proposed corpus of ₹10,000 crore.
