Setting the Stage for Global Leaders
With the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12-13, New Delhi is gearing up to welcome delegates from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other participating nations. The preparations are not just about logistics and security; they are about presenting
a clean, green, and aesthetically pleasing image of the capital on the world stage. According to NDMC Chairperson Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, the goal is to ensure world-class cleanliness and efficient civic management, with all concerned departments working in close coordination. The NDMC's comprehensive plan covers everything from sanitation and infrastructure to horticulture and public health, aiming for a presentation that meets international standards.
A Coordinated Civic Overhaul
To manage this massive undertaking, the NDMC has divided 41 major roads into 14 circles. Each circle is assigned a dedicated nodal officer responsible for daily inspections and ensuring that all standard operating procedures are met. This strategy aims to create a system of focused monitoring and rapid response. These officers and their field teams are tasked with addressing any civic issues promptly, from waste removal to infrastructure maintenance. In addition, special sanitation arrangements will be in effect from September 9 to 14, including the deployment of additional staff, night-duty teams, mobile toilets, and temporary dustbins to handle the influx of visitors and events.
Paving the Way for Diplomacy
A key component of the preparations involves significant infrastructure work. The Works Department is focused on repairing potholes, maintaining footpaths, painting railings, and ensuring all road signage is in pristine condition. This effort extends to ensuring proper stormwater drainage and removing debris, with special attention given to preventing waterlogging, a crucial measure considering the possibility of rain during the summit. Enforcement teams will also be active, removing encroachments and unauthorized hoardings, regulating street vending, and conducting special drives against illegally parked vehicles to ensure smooth traffic flow along VIP routes.
A Capital in Full Bloom
The most visible aspect of the beautification drive is the extensive work being done by the horticulture department. The NDMC has identified 17 roundabouts for special beautification, 15 locations for large floral boards, and nine spots for stunning flower fountains. The plan involves planting seasonal flowers, greening barren patches, and maintaining green corridors to create a vibrant and well-manicured appearance across the city. Decorative planters will be installed along prominent roads and public spaces, ensuring a fresh and welcoming atmosphere for all attendees. This horticultural makeover is designed to enhance the city's visual appeal and create a lasting positive impression.
More Than Just a Summit
The preparations extend beyond the main summit events at Bharat Mandapam. The NDMC is also organizing several public-facing events, including a BRICS Bazaar, a BRICS Run & Ride, and a BRICS Food Festival. Nodal officers have been specifically appointed to manage the civic arrangements for these festivals, coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure they run smoothly. To promote these events and the summit itself, BRICS branding will be displayed on 154 digital screens and at approximately 83 public toilet utilities throughout the NDMC area, creating widespread public awareness.
