What is the New Token System?
Indian Railways has introduced a new token-based system for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Instead of standing in a queue for hours before the booking window opens, passengers will now be issued
a numbered token. This token determines your place in the queue, meaning you only need to approach the counter when your number is called. The initiative, which has been rolled out at select stations and is expected to expand, is designed to manage crowds, improve transparency, and make the process smoother for travellers booking last-minute tickets. This change applies only to offline counter bookings and does not affect the online Tatkal booking process via the IRCTC website or app.
How the New System Works
The process is straightforward. Passengers must visit the railway reservation counter during a specific token distribution window before the actual Tatkal booking begins. For AC class tickets, tokens are typically distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For Non-AC classes, the window is from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. After collecting a token, you can wait for your number to be announced or displayed. When your turn comes, you proceed to the counter with your completed form and valid ID to book the ticket. This synchronised process eliminates the need for multiple visits or waiting in chaotic lines from the early morning.
The All-Important Booking Windows
A crucial point to remember is that the token system does not change the official Tatkal booking start times. Bookings for AC classes still commence at 10:00 AM, and bookings for Non-AC classes (like Sleeper) begin at 11:00 AM. The new token system simply organises the queue before these windows open. Getting a token ensures your place in the line, but the actual ticket issuance only happens once the respective booking window is active. This is why knowing both the token distribution time and the booking start time is critical for success.
Token Limits and Priority
Initially, each counter will issue a limited number of tokens—for instance, 10 for AC class and 15 for Non-AC class—though this number can be adjusted based on demand at the station. If seats remain available after all token holders have been served, walk-in passengers may be attended to on a first-come, first-served basis. Furthermore, the system may use different categories. Some zones are implementing a 'Category A' for passengers booking for immediate family, giving them priority. This requires showing valid photo IDs for both yourself and the family member. All tokens issued are non-transferable.
Key Things for Passengers to Remember
To make the most of this new system, preparation is key. Always carry a valid, government-issued photo ID like an Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Voter ID for the main passenger. It's wise to have the details of all travellers handy and the reservation form filled out completely and correctly before your token number is called. Since the system is being implemented in phases, confirm with your local railway station if the token system is active there. This new procedure brings much-needed order but doesn't change the high demand for Tatkal tickets. Arriving early during the token distribution window remains your best bet for securing a spot.
